APTIS Ticket Month Codings

Does anyone have any idea where the curious three-letter abbreviations for months on APTIS tickets originates? 93.93.133.82 (talk) 15:55, 18 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I don't have a source to hand, but my understanding is that they were adopted as an anti-fraud measure – or at least, to make forgery more obvious to spot. (Not sure how effective it was! However I have read of at least one case where a forged season ticket was spotted because of this.) So having non-intuitive abbreviations was supposed to make it more likely for forgers to make a mistake. For everybody else's info, the month abbreviations were as follows (non-intuitive in bold): JNR, FBY, MCH, APR, MAY, JUN, JLY, AUG, SEP, OCT, NOV, DMR. I have recently done some research at The National Archives on the introduction of APTIS, so I'll see if there's anything in any of the hundreds of documents I went through. Current usage
