1922 Trinity Blue and White football team → 1922 Trinity Blue Devils football team – The name "Blue Devils" actually was first used by The Chronicle for the 1922–23 academic year. This is stated in this name history page on the team's website, and this is supported if you search 'blue devils' in the 1922 archives of The Chronicle. The name was not technically official in 1922, but "Blue and White" was never an "official" name either. There isn't really a precise point in time when the university officially adopted "Blue Devils"; per the name history page I linked previously, it was unofficially adopted by student publications in 1922, and gradually gained acceptance and usage in the years that followed.
