March 24, 1802 - Richard Trevithick took out his first patent, for the first full sized road locomotive;
December 24, 1801 - demonstrated it to the public, successfully carried a number of men up Beacon Hill;
February 21, 1804 - tested first self-propelling steam engine or steam locomotive to run on rails at the Peny-Darren ironworks on its normally horse-drawn tramline; able to pull a load of 15 tons at a speed of about 5 mph; adhesion was a problem as the iron wheels slipped on the iron rails, cast-iron rails of the tramways not strong enough to support the weight of new machine, experiment abandoned.

Trevithick bouwde rond 1800 een primitieve stoomauto, the Puffing Devil.
