Reasons that lurkers lurk

[edit]

This is the 80/20 rule with a different ratio due to accessibility, anonymity. In a real environment where the lurkers actually have to lurk, some percentage contribute to not look like lurkers. BunnyStrider (talk) 22:30, 21 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Reporting Problems

[edit]

Although I don't have a scientific study/survey at hand, it is my long-term experience that for every one person who reports a problem with a product (software or hardware), 99 others have the problem but don't report it (the equivalent of lurkers).

In the retail world, some of the 99 simply return the product - even though there may be an easy solution - and the others simply throw it away. 162.205.217.211 (talk) 00:43, 14 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

4% rule

[edit]

A look at this article's data pages indicates that it was created by 1 person and, over the past 90 days, has been viewed 28 times. Bigturtle (talk) 19:58, 28 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

P. Tomi Austin

[edit]

Looking online, I find no source for this. Everything that comes up when searching for “P. Tomi Austin” or “P. Tomi Austin lurker” is quoting this article (relevant xkcd). It seems made up, maybe? DemonDays64 (talk) 20:57, 1 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I see no mention of that name in the article, so I assume the relevant statement has been removed from the article. V2Blast (talk) 15:21, 30 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Should this be an essay?

[edit]

There is much essays to find in here, but what if an essay about this is created? 125.167.114.151 (talk) 01:50, 25 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Social media commentary

[edit]

I find this to be true of social media commentary as well. It doesnt matter the topic of discussion, only about 1% of comments contribute meaningful content to the discussion. Of the 90% of all others, comments are outdated cliches that have already circulated for years that no one really needs to hear again, brainless automatons interjecting old news and old sentiments without offering solutions or analysis, or moving the conversation forward. Basically meme culture. While the remaining 9% think they are contributing but only restating or reiterating content thats already been stated in a comment thread to which they are responding but didnt bother read. An entire social media thread could be compressed to 1% of its size if all the redundancies, meaninglessness, and common knowledge was removed. 50.34.41.50 (talk) 22:30, 30 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

1% rule and Wikipedia

[edit]

I think that the statement that the 1-9-10 rule or 1% rule applies to Wikipedia is inaccurate: the Wikimedia Foundation reports that less than 0.05% of visitors are active editors in any given month (rather than 10%), and Wikipedia surveys show that 28% of users state that creating new articles is their primary activity (rather than 10%). @TheConflux: do you have another source? I recognize that the statistics that I found aren't perfect. Thanks, Inverted Hourglass (talk) 16:44, 24 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I've removed the piece of information, didn't realize the Wikimedia Foundation found otherwise. That's surprising to me, but I'm happy to change my mind. TheConflux (talk) 18:41, 24 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. It was surprising to me too, though I imagine that the barrier to entry on Wikipedia is a lot higher than other sites. Inverted Hourglass (talk) 23:28, 24 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
