The anarchist prince

[edit]

I am removing the "prince" part from Kropotkin. Kropotkin relinquished his title and refused to be acknowledged as nobility during his life. When he visited the USA, he refused many invitations by the bourgeoisie, as he recognized that they were interested in him due to his nobility. It devalues Kropotkin to refer to him by his noble title.

Brilliant work

[edit]

I actually have an incomplete English edition of his universal encyclopedia and it is truly great work, rivaling that of contemporary Britannica. Most lithographs of people from areas he visited are made from life before photographs could be incorporated into printing, and the detail on the places is amazing, often including local folklore.--mrg3105mrg3105 03:10, 13 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

New University of Brussels?

[edit]

Several sources suggest that in 1895 Reclus became a professor at the New University of Brussels, which he had helped to collect money for and found in that year. What exactly was the institution founded in 1895, and what's the relation between this New University and the University of Brussels mentioned in the page at present? Rewriting + adding sources

[edit]

Currently working through a rewrite of the biography to add additional information and source claims. Working from Marie Fleming's biography of Reclus but will incorporate other material. Boredintheevening (talk) 03:17, 19 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the heads up and let me know if you need a hand with anything.
For the Egypt citation, which looks like it was copied from Luigi Galleani, does it need both referenecs or can it be reduced to a single, reliable citation? It's throwing a citation error because the short footnote is missing the full citation information. There are also some additions that are missing page numbers, e.g., the ones sourced to Senta, making the claims hard to verify. czar 12:03, 24 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for spotting these issues. I've just added in page numbers for the Senta citations. And I've updated the Egypt citation to a reference to two passages in the Senta biography. Boredintheevening (talk) 15:27, 24 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good! Also got disconnected before I could add before: I also recommend avoiding primary sources (e.g., Kropotkin himself) where reliable, secondary sources exist. For instance, if Kropotkin's comments were noteworthy, citing a secondary source that quoted them rather than the direct source. Also the Brun research doesn't appear to be reliably published so I'd recommend replacing that source as well. czar 15:40, 24 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Boredintheevening: One of the Fleming refs (#34) is missing a page number czar 14:26, 31 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for spotting. I've just fixed it, updated to page 55. And just to make a note of it, I'm working from the paperback (ISBN 0-921689-16-0) rather than the hardback (ISBN 0-921689-17-9). Boredintheevening (talk) 14:41, 31 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Often the paperback and hardcover academic books share the same page numbers but looks like the 1979 and 1988 page numbers are different. Looks like yours is the 1988 Black Rose edition. czar 15:18, 31 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
