Question

Friends, I require some information on the subject, "The various processes involved in making railway-wagons". Could somebody please add a few pages on this matter in wikipedia or direct me to a webpage which provides some information on the same? I shall be really thankful to you. Fixed. {{portal}} uses the page name as the portal name. Since Train is singular, but the portal uses Trains, the plural form. The correct template to use is {{portalpar}} which uses a parameter passed in as the name of the portal to which it links. slambo 21:30, Jun 26, 2005 (UTC)

I was following the examples of other portal pages such as India and Astronomy where they are not visible. Since they're just commented, they're easy to restore. In fact, I had planned to move them from the div where they were into the box headers so they don't get in the way of the text within the boxes and more closely follow the convention where the section edit tag is on the same line as the section name. slambo 18:36, May 16, 2005 (UTC)

I tried a few things to get the edit tags up into the box headers, but nothing really looked good. So, on those boxes that don't have an Archive link and that are not the intro box, I've restored the edit tags. On the Featured article and Featured picture box, I've stubbed out feature mini-article spaces much like the Main page uses for the Featured article of the day. However, since I don't think we're going to get that many good articles this year that have to do with railroads, I picked a weekly interval.

The portal page will automatically update to the next feature when it's time for the change, we just have to fill in the appropriate sub-article pages. Featured article subpages are at Portal:Trains/Featured article/Week 99, 9999 where 99 is the week number (as returned by the {{CURRENTWEEK}} template, and 9999 is the year number (as returned by the {{CURRENTYEAR}} template. Featured picture stubs are in a similar location, just substitute picture for article.

Now, we need to setup a process for suggestions. My thought would be to do something similar to, but less formal than, WP:FAC. It works, so we might as well do it that way. I'd also like to setup a similar mechanism for the DYK box as is used for the DYK on the main page.

Trains - Automobiles - Airplanes

There's already Portal:Aviation, but I don't see any mention on Wikipedia:Wikiportal for Automotive or Maritime transport. There's plenty of information for portals on each of these topics, but one overall Transportation portal might not be a bad idea. Care to give it a try? My specialty is rail transport, so that's what I'm sticking with. slambo 23:38, May 22, 2005 (UTC)

DYK updates

For the next three weekends, I will be away from the computer and will not be able to update the DYK section on a daily basis over the weekends. I will still be here during the week, it's just on June 11, June 12, June 18, June 19 and June 25 (I should be available on June 26), if we're going to have a daily DYK update, someone else will need to pick the facts for those five days. Take a look through Portal:Trains/Did you know to see the selection criteria, reread the facts that I've already used and choose something new to tell us about. Do I hear a volunteer? Improving British Railway Stations

Hello, I've been passed here from the UK talk pages. Being a newbie slowly learning the ropes round here, I was very pleased to stumble across the UK Railway station pages.. and then shocked at the amount of "dead links" and non-tagged stubs. I've been doing my best with Lancashire's stations - I've either created articles or fleshed out existing stubs on about a dozen or so stations - Chorley, Leyland, Lostock Hall, Blackpool's North and South, Moss Side etc etc.

I wondered if anyone here was active in maintaining and improving the UK railway pages and if there was any way we could work together to really move with the existing pages?

Personally, I haven't done much in that respect except sort those that were tagged with {{rail-stub}} into {{UK-depot-stub}}. I don't know of any standards that have been developed for this type of article yet. slambo 17:48, August 30, 2005 (UTC)

Hey Slambo. I have found a few "unwritten rules" along the way (as ever is the Wiki way, I suppose =)), and have tried to be as honourable to them as I can. One example where I have been bold is with Merseyrail and the "preceeding/following" station template box. I couldn't find a colour to represent Merseyrail so I chose yellow. I don't know if there is a group looking after the category so I've just used this in all relevant places since. I think there's a lot of work to be done here and it seems there is not one focused set of people around yet to do it. doktorb 19:27, 30 August 2005 (UTC)

I think you're right in that there isn't a group centered around these station articles yet. I've intended to put together a WikiProject Trains Manual of style article together for some time based on the de-facto standards that we've hashed out on the project talk page so far, but haven't had the time to sit down and do it yet. slambo 19:53, August 30, 2005 (UTC)

Which Coleford?

In Portal:Trains/Anniversaries/July 18 it is mentions that "The Coleford Railway is chartered to build a railroad between Wyesham and Coleford, England". Which Coleford is that exactly?--Commander Keane 21:12, 10 December 2005 (UTC)

Rotating lead portal image

While the rest of the images in the portal are rotated on at least a weekly basis (except the todolist clipboard), the Introduction section's image has remained static since the portal went live in May. I'd like to start rotating the lead image on a monthly basis, but I also want some input from everyone on what they think would be good images to show the idea of "a train is...". That would fit in nicely with what I'm thinking of. I've started a nomination/discussion page at Portal:Trains/Intro/Image candidates; yes, the format is just like the other nomination/discussion pages, only there aren't subpages here for nomination discussions.
