[edit]- 1853 – Bristol and Exeter Railway's Yeovil branch line is fully opened for goods traffic.
- 1860 – The Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn in Germany opens between Bochum Hauptbahnhof and Witten.[1]
- 1863 – The first rails are laid for construction of the Central Pacific Railroad in California.[2]
- 1868 – The Flint and Pere Marquette Railroad opens between Midland and Averill, Michigan.[3]
- 1874 – Grand Trunk Railway converts all 546 miles (879 km) of its track east of Montreal from 5 ft 6 in (1676 mm) gauge to 4 ft 8+1⁄2 in (1,435 mm) standard gauge.[4]
20th century
[edit]- 1948 – The American Freedom Train, carrying the original versions of the United States Constitution, Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights, makes its final public display in Havre de Grace, Maryland, before the official end of tour.
- 1951 – Quebec Railway Light and Power Company sells its Montmorency division, 26 miles (42 km) of track between Quebec City and St. Joachim, to Canadian National Railway.[4]
- 1953 – Electric operation of the Waldenburgerbahn in Switzerland began using 1500 V DC and completely new rolling stock.
- 1977 – Locomotive number 043 903 pulls the last regularly scheduled mainline train on German tracks to be hauled by a steam locomotive.[1]
- 1984 – The first Board of Directors of the newly formed Alaska Railroad, chaired by James Campbell, is appointed by Governor Bill Sheffield, and Frank Turpin is appointed company president.[5]
- 1992 – Southern California's Metrolink opens.[6]
- 1995 – Canadian National Railway reopens commuter service between Montreal's Gare Centrale and Deux-Montagnes using new electric multiple unit rolling stock.[4]
