[edit]- 1872 – The ¾ mile (1 km) long Bristol Harbour Railway opens from the junction of the Bristol and Exeter Railway and Great Western Railway at Temple Meads to the Floating Harbour in Bristol.
20th century
[edit]- 1971 – A runaway train carrying 350 passengers, mostly children, derails next to a 12-metre deep (39 ft) ravine near Vicuña, Chile, killing twelve people.
21st century
[edit]- 2004 – 191 people are killed and more than 2,000 are injured when a series of bombs explode on commuter trains in Madrid, Spain.
- 2005 – A railgrinder working westbound on the Union Pacific mainline sideswipes an eastbound BNSF Railway intermodal train at Rochelle, Illinois; the trains don't derail but a few containers are destroyed. The entire event is recorded on the Trains magazine Rochelle webcam.
