[edit]- 1876 – The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad reaches Pueblo, Colorado.
- 1892 – Japan's Mito Railway is consolidated into the Japanese National Railways.
- 1893 – The New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad (the New Haven Railroad) leases the Old Colony Railroad.
20th century
[edit]- 1920 – Control of American railroads is returned to private ownership and administration with the disbandment of the USRA.
- 1956 – The Gulf Coast Lines system of railways in the United States is merged into Missouri Pacific Railroad.
- 1967 – The Hankyu Senri Line, connecting Tenjimbashisuji Rokuchōme to Kita-Senri in Osaka Prefecture, Japan, opens.
- 1974 – The former Japanese Government Railways Uwajima Line is extended from Ekawasaki to Wakai and the line is renamed as the Yodo Line.
- 1989 – The Abbeville-Grimes Railway (a predecessor of the Bay Line Railroad) begins operations between its namesake cities in Alabama.
- 1995 – CP Rail announces that Robert J. Ritchie will succeed I. Barry Scott as president and CEO of CP Rail.

[edit]- 1816 – John Souther, founder of Globe Locomotive Works (d. 1911).
- 1851 – Edward Ponsonby, director for London, Brighton and South Coast Railway beginning in 1895 and chairman of same 1908-1920, is born (d. 1920).
- 1955 – Peter Zars, the first on-train birth aboard the California Zephyr passenger train (while the train passed through Ruby Canyon).
