[edit]- 1831 – The West Chester Railroad is chartered in Pennsylvania.
- 1848 – The Cleveland, Painesville and Ashtabula Railroad, a predecessor of the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway, is chartered in Ohio.[1]
- 1852 – Oxford, Worcester and Wolverhampton Railway opens Fearnall Heath railway station in England.[2]
- 1857 – The Galena and Illinois River Railroad, a predecessor of the Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad, is incorporated in Illinois.[1]
- 1868 – The Los Angeles and San Pedro Railroad is incorporated in California.
- 1880 – Adna Anderson succeeds William Milnor Roberts as Engineer-in-Chief of Northern Pacific Railway.
- 1886 – The Kansas City, Memphis and Birmingham Railroad is incorporated in Mississippi.[3]
20th century
[edit]- 1947 – Pennsylvania Railroad's Red Arrow passenger train derails at Gallatin, Pennsylvania; 24 people are killed in the accident.[4]
21st century
[edit]- 2003 – An arsonist in a suicide attempt causes the Daegu subway fire when he sets fire to a train stopped at the Jungangno station (pictured) of the Daegu Metropolitan Subway in Daegu, South Korea; 198 people die and 147 others are injured.
- 2004 – Nishapur train disaster: A train carrying a convoy of petrol, fertiliser, and sulfur derails and explodes in Iran, killing 320 people.
