[edit]- 1860 – The Staten Island Railway starts operations in Staten Island, New York; this is now the oldest rapid transit right-of-way in New York City, but it is operated separately from the New York City Subway.[1]
- 1869 – Crews building the Central Pacific Railroad lay 10 miles (16 km) of track in one day.

[edit]- 2005 – Los Angeles Metrolink opens a new station in Palmdale on the system's Antelope Valley line.
