[edit]- 1834 – The Ithaca and Port Renwick Railroad is chartered to connect Ithaca to Cayuga Lake, New York.[1]
- 1853 – At 15.35 local time, the first commercial passenger train in India leaves Bori Bunder station in Mumbai for Thane, a distance of 34 km (21 miles). The journey takes one hour and fifteen minutes.
- 1853 – The Rome, Watertown and Ogdensburg Railroad files Articles of Association in New York.[2]
- 1872 – The incorporators of the Winona and South Western Railway, a predecessor of the Chicago Great Western Railway in Minnesota, meet and elect the first Board of Directors.[3]
20th century
[edit]- 1901 – The Ottawa and Gatineau Railway, later to become the Ottawa, Northern and Western Railway, is granted authority to build an extension to connect to the Interprovincial Bridge.[4]
- 1901 – The Nashville and Clarksville Railroad is chartered in Tennessee.[5]
- 1990 – Seventy people are killed in a fire aboard a local train in Patna, India.[6]
- 1993 – Indian Railways opens the line between Bangalore and Mysore.[6]
21st century
[edit]- 2003 – The Seattle Landmarks Preservation Board officially designates the Seattle Monorail as a Historic Landmark by unanimous vote.[7]
- 2005 – Alaska Railroad opens its new headquarters building and operations center in Anchorage, Alaska.[8]

[edit]- 1920 – Alan Pegler, British railway preservationist, is born (d. 2012).
Deaths
[edit]- 1911 – William Alexander McFall, locomotive engineer for Canadian Pacific Railway who drove the first passenger train over the Interprovincial Bridge, posthumously awarded the King Edward Medal for his actions in preventing further death in a derailment on April 14, 1911.[4]
