Portal:Saints/Saint of the day

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This page is being created so that we can try to set up at least some of the contents of the portal for rotation on a daily basis. I certainly think that we have sufficient biographies to have a daily rotation for the biography section, and maybe for the pictures, quotes and DYK sections as well. Please use the space below for any specific content you think should be included on any given day. To start things off, I think a possibly good idea would be to have the selected biographies and DYKs for every day be those for those individuals who have feasts in one or more churches on the day in question. That is however only one suggestion. Please feel free to list any specific suggestions you might have below. I have broken it up into two basic areas. The first one is to propose articles which individuals think should be included in one or more section of the portal, and the second to propose specific dates specific content might be shown on the portal. I have added a few nominations to each to indicate a possible format.

General suggestions

[edit]

The Top importance biographies to the Saints project as of today - Anthony the Great, Augustine of Canterbury, Augustine of Hippo, Barnabas, Bartholomew the Apostle, Basil of Caesarea, Eusebius of Caesarea, Gabriel, the Holy Innocents, Isaac, James the Just, James the Less, James, son of Alphaeus, James, son of Zebedee, John Calvin, John the Apostle, John the Baptist, John the Evangelist, Joseph of Arimathea, Jude, brother of Jesus, Jude the Apostle, Luke the Evangelist, Mark the Evangelist, Martin Luther, Martin Luther King Jr., Mary (mother of Jesus), Mary Magdalene, Matthew the Evangelist, Michael (archangel), Paul of Tarsus, Philip the Apostle, Pope Leo I, Saint Andrew, Saint Anne, Saint George, Saint Nicholas, Saint Peter, Saint Stephen, Simon the Apostle, Thomas Aquinas, Thomas Becket, Thomas the Apostle

Other nominees: Maron - founder of the Maronite Church

An interesting idea. As an Episcopalian, I'd probably start with selections from Lesser Feasts and Fasts, which would pick up some Western saints, as well as some like Gregory the Illuminator, whose inclusion would greatly add to the project. -- BPMullins | Talk 22:10, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
After some thought, I'm thinking we might arrange it something like this:
  • (1) The biography of the day would be for probably the most significant person who has any sort of memorial on that day, of whichever creed, with preference for individuals who might be of top importance to a given small church although of lesser importance outside the church
    (2) have the quotes and picture of the day be from other individuals commemorated on that day who are memorialized on that day
    (3) have the DYKs represent at least some of the other individuals who are commemorated on that day, with maybe a separate section devoted to links to the various calendars used as sources
    (4) in instances when the top celebration of a given day isn't directly biographical (perhaps something like the Annunciation (and maybe Christmas and Easter), place that as the main article of the day, and allow the biography to be used on the top individual saint commemorated on that day.

Suggestions by specific day

[edit]

The key for below is relatively easy. A blue link means the article exists; a red link means there is no such article but there are links to such an article; a bold text means that, so far as I can tell, there are neither an extant article or links to a non-existent article.
