- March 6, 1970 – Members of the Weather Underground plant a bomb in a Greenwich Village townhouse, which kills three members when it explodes prematurely.
- March 15, 1892 – Jesse W. Reno patents the first escalator, which he calls the "Endless Conveyor or Elevator."
- March 22, 1989 – The New York City Board of Estimate is found to be unconstitutional by the Supreme Court of the United States in Board of Estimate of City of New York v. Morris.
- March 24, 1900 – New York City Mayor Robert Anderson Van Wyck breaks ground on the Interboro Rapid Transit (train pictured) that would link Manhattan and Brooklyn.
- March 28, 1950 – City College of New York wins the 1950 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament, defeating Bradley University in the championship game.
