- January 1, 1797 – Albany replaces New York City as capital of the state of New York.
- January 1, 1874 – New York City annexes the West Bronx.
- January 4, 1754 – Columbia University is founded as "Kings College".
- January 9, 1903 – Frank J. Farrell and William Stephen Devery purchase a defunct franchise in the American League for $18,000 and move it to New York, where it becomes the New York Yankees.
- January 15, 2009 – US Airways Flight 1549 makes an emergency landing into the Hudson River (pictured) shortly after takeoff from LaGuardia Airport. All passengers and crew members survive.

- February 1, 1790 – The Supreme Court of the United States convenes for the first time.
- February 2, 1653 – New Amsterdam received municipal rights, officially becoming a city.
- February 12, 1908 – The 1908 New York to Paris Race convenes. George Schuster wins in 88 days.
- February 19, 1674 – Netherlands and England sign the Peace of Westminster, in which New York City becomes an English colony.
- February 20, 1872 – the Metropolitan Museum of Art (pictured) opens.
- February 26, 1993 – Seven die in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.

- March 6, 1970 – Members of the Weather Underground plant a bomb in a Greenwich Village townhouse, which kills three members when it explodes prematurely.
- March 15, 1892 – Jesse W. Reno patents the first escalator, which he calls the "Endless Conveyor or Elevator."
- March 22, 1989 – The New York City Board of Estimate is found to be unconstitutional by the Supreme Court of the United States in Board of Estimate of City of New York v. Morris.
- March 24, 1900 – New York City Mayor Robert Anderson Van Wyck breaks ground on the Interboro Rapid Transit (train pictured) that would link Manhattan and Brooklyn.
- March 28, 1950 – City College of New York wins the 1950 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament, defeating Bradley University in the championship game.

- April 1, 1789 – The United States House of Representatives holds its first full meeting in Federal Hall, achieving a quorum for the first time.
- April 2, 1921 – Albert Einstein arrives in New York on his first United States visit, and lectures on the Theory of Relativity.
- April 18, 1923 – In the first ever game at Yankee Stadium, the New York Yankees defeat the Boston Red Sox 4–1 on a three-run home run by Babe Ruth.
- April 24, 1913 – The Woolworth Building (pictured) opens, becoming the tallest building in the world until 1930.
- April 27, 2006 – Construction begins on the Freedom Tower.

- May 10, 1837 – New York City banks fail in the Panic of 1837, and unemployment reaches record levels.
- May 12, 1789 – The Society of St. Tammany is incorporated by soldiers of the American Revolutionary War. It later becomes a group of political bosses, known as Tammany Hall.
- May 26, 1977 – George Willig climbs the South Tower of the World Trade Center.

- June 17, 1885 – The Statue of Liberty arrives in New York Harbor aboard the French ship Isère.
- June 28, 1969 – The Stonewall riots begin in response to a police raid of the Stonewall Inn, a gay tavern in Greenwich Village.

- July 1, 1948 – The first flight departs from John F. Kennedy International Airport.
- July 2, 1868 – The IRT Ninth Avenue Line, the first elevated railway in New York City, opens.
- July 13, 1977 – A New York City blackout of 1977 lasting 25 hours begins, resulting in city-wide looting and arson.
- July 13–16, 1863 – The largest insurrection in United States history, outside of the American Civil War, occurs when an anti-draft riot (pictured) sees at least 120 civilians die, and 11 black men lynched.
- July 19, 1845 – The Great New York City Fire of 1845 breaks out.
- July 31, 1667 – The Treaty of Breda ends conflict between England and the Netherlands, with the Dutch surrendering their claim on New York.

- August 6, 1988 – The Tompkins Square Park Police Riot occurs, leading to reforms of the New York Police Department.
- August 8, 1673 – During the Third Anglo-Dutch War, a Dutch battle fleet of 23 ships demands the English surrender of New York City.
- August 14, 1980 – The 1980 Democratic National Convention nominates Jimmy Carter and Walter Mondale for President and Vice President of the United States, respectively.
- August 15, 1965 – The Beatles play at Shea Stadium during their 1965 United States tour, marking the peak of "Beatlemania".
- August 19–21, 1991 – The Crown Heights riot occurs among tensions between African Americans and Orthodox Jews in the Crown Heights neighborhood.
- August 27, 1776 – The British Army outflanks the Continental Army at the Battle of Long Island (pictured), forcing George Washington to evacuate to Manhattan.

- September 3, 1609 – Explorer Henry Hudson (pictured) reaches the river that will one day bear his name. He proceeds to sail up the river, reaching as far as present-day Albany.
- September 11, 2001 – The September 11 attacks occur, killing 3,000 and destroying the World Trade Center.
- September 13, 1970 – The inaugural New York City Marathon is held.
