Loanwords in the Quran

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Although the Quranic text is in Arabic, there are many words with roots in other Semitic languages and non-Semitic languages, the former words are difficult to distinguish due to common linguistic etymology [1]. According to Rippin, more than 300 words in the Quran are borrowed from Hebrew, Syriac, Aramaic, Nabataean, Persian, Coptic, Latin, ancient Greek and Utopian.[2]
