House of Bordziłowski

Białynia coat of arms

The House of Bordziłowski (Belarusian: Бардзілоўскі, romanizedBardziloŭski, Lithuanian: Bardzilauskas, Russian: Бордзиловский, romanizedBordzilovskiy) is a family of previous nobility in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Russian Empire (then Soviet Union), and present-day Belarus, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, and Ukraine that originated from Smolensk, Grand Duchy of Lithuania (now Russia).

The shortened variant, Bordziła, was derived from the Germanic name Bardila. The early ancestor likely had a beard and an axe, forming a nickname from Proto-Germanic "bardilaz."[1]

The noble family was part of the Bialynia coat of arms. Around 1480, the house of Bordziłowski was established in an apartment in Mazovia. Jan Bordziłowski (later Iwan Harbuz-Bordziłowski), a boyar, and who may have been the son of the early Bordziłowski patriarch, was awarded for his bravery by Vasili III Ivanovich in Krzyczewski Powiat (now Krychaw District), and established his estate in the village of Bardzily (named after him), in which he was granted by Grand Duke Sigismund I in 1523. The noble family then was part of the Nobility of Mogilev Province. Some of Bordziłowski's descendants served in the Polish army.[2]
