Book PDF withdrawn

[edit]

Book PDF rendering (OCG) was withdrawn three years ago. Highlighting the withdrawal is continuing to cause confusion as to what we have today, see for example this current proposal. So this edit comment is way past its sell-by date. How old does the past have to be before it is no longer top-level news? — Cheers, Steelpillow (Talk) 07:31, 26 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It explains why they dont work - the proposal has nothing to do with the fact it does not work.--Moxy 🍁 11:29, 26 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I am sorry, what don't work how? Are you saying it necessary to explain something that has not existed for three years? I do find your remarks utterly unintelligible; it would help if you could make clear and full statements, not merely leave cryptic clues. — Cheers, Steelpillow (Talk) 12:19, 26 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yes we need to explain why they dont work, why they are hidden from view and why we are keeping them in place. All is explained in the section with links to more information.--Moxy 🍁 21:08, 26 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, that is more utter gibberish to me. Please focus on clarity and precision. Specifically:
  • what don't work?
  • what are hidden from view?
  • we are keeping what in place where?
  • explained in which section?
So far as I can see, everything that should be working is working, I left everything explained where it should be explained, and ancient history is fit only for the archives. — Cheers, Steelpillow (Talk) 08:24, 27 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
To put it another way, the OCG is an ex-service, it is no longer pining for the fjords, it is deceased. Its feet have been nailed to its perch these three years past, it is time to do the decent thing and stop confusing people. A simple memorial is more than enough. I am reverting your archaeology unless and until you can be more coherent in your defence of it. — Cheers, Steelpillow (Talk) 08:33, 27 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure why your not willing to explain whats going on to our readers...so i moved the info Help:Books/Status.--Moxy 🍁 11:12, 27 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
What was going on three years ago. What part of that belongs in the present tense? — Cheers, Steelpillow (Talk) 11:19, 27 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yes it was withdrawn 3 years ago and the templates suppressed last year with the templates retained in place. Why do you want to hide this facts? Why do you not want to inform our readers about alternatives? The point of the section (then page I created [1]) is to link from our books to an explanation of why they dont function as intended, why the book links are retained, why they should not be removed and what our readers can do to get a book. Asking for outside help...as I am puzzled about your actions here of suppressing information and breaking incoming links on purpose. --Moxy 🍁 11:40, 27 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
What planet are you on? I did not hide them, I moved them out of the current limelight because they kept confusing people, is all. Help:Books is careful to explain about the alternatives. That is the right place to do so. The need to go duplicating it all in templates has long gone. There is no broken "as intended" presented to our visitors any more; explaining why it doesn't happen raises more confusion than leaving well alone. I have broken no incoming links to my knowledge, and if I did then you have singularly failed to discuss what was going on, instead starting down the derogatory edit comment road. So your puzzlement about my actions seems entirely due to your own muddled misconceptions of them and your failure to stay cool. — Cheers, Steelpillow (Talk) 12:38, 27 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Note that my puzzlement about your actions led me to open this conversation. And that puzzlement still stands. As I understand your recent reply, you are concerned that a non-existent feature is not being described in the help information. Might I suggest that the Help pages are the wrong place to do that, and that some other namespace would be more appropriate, such as at WP:Books#History? If you feel that anything no longer visible, or even existing, needs to be remembered, then perhaps you could move it there? — Cheers, Steelpillow (Talk) 12:38, 27 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
OK so don't put the book info with the book stuff. Will move it to the Wikipedia namespace and fix all the redirects to there. Very odd but OK. --Moxy 🍁 16:41, 27 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
