The Fairmont Golden Prague hotel is a 9-story, 320-room hotel on the bank of the Vltava River, near the Old Town, in Prague, Czech Republic. It is managed by Fairmont Hotels.[1]
History
[edit]The former InterContinental Praha hotel was designed by noted Czech architect Karel Filsak in the Brutalist style and constructed by the Czech national travel firm ČEDOK from 1968 to 1974.[2] It started receiving guests in August 1974 and celebrated its grand opening on December 7, 1974.[3]
Fairmont Golden Prague is a new chapter in the rich heritage of the former InterContinental hotel, which was conceived as a showcase of the power of Czechoslovak architecture, art and design and opened in 1974. The building, designed by a team of artists led by renowned architect Karel Filsak, has become a pearl of brutalism and an important object of modernism with a high added value of applied art.
Westmont Hospitality Group purchased the hotel in 2010. They sold it in 2013 to the Slovak-based Best Hotel Properties, owned by investment firm J&T. It was sold again, in December 2018, to R2G, the investment group of Czech billionaire Oldřich Šlemr. The hotel was renamed the Fairmont Golden Prague in May 2020, before closing for a major renovation. It will reopen in April 2025 as the Fairmont Golden Prague.[4]
The hotel interior is decorated with artworks that were mostly designed and created specifically for the property, thus forming an integral part of its architecture in a unique harmony. This currently comprises and represents two main eras: works from the period of the hotel’s construction at the turn of the 1960s and 1970s and contemporary works. In both cases, these are artists whose work has crossed the borders of the Czech Republic and who have exhibited or are exhibiting all over the world.
