Wonderbug is an indie rock band based in London, England, known for blending grunge influences with a modern indie rock sound. The band was formed in the early 2020s, members include Edie Chesters (vocals and synth), Ollie McDaid (vocals and guitar), Otto Fitzgerald (bass), and Ben Chesters (vocals and drums).

History

[edit]

Wonderbug emerged from the London music scene with regular performances at notable venues such as The Windmill, Brixton, The Social, and George Tavern. The band, amongst others, filled a void left by underground artists progressing into larger popularity; such as Black Midi, Squid (band), and The Last Dinner Party.

The band's lyrics often explore themes of identity, time anxiety, and personal transformation, reflecting the members' experiences of young adulthood.

Debut EP: Scrap (2024)

[edit]

In November 2024, Wonderbug self-released their debut EP, titled Scrap. The EP features a collection of tracks that delve into the process of shedding teenagehood and embracing the uncertainties of adult life. The project was praised for its raw, introspective lyricism and its sonic range, combining gritty guitar riffs with lush synth layers.

Tracks from Scrap have been featured on independent radio stations, (notably KEXP-FM and BBC Radio 6 Music) and reviewed by several online music platforms, solidifying the band's presence in the indie music community.

The EP was produced by Yuri Shibuichi (Honeyglaze), who has simultaneously produced for other bands emerging from the same scene such as Tapir! and Mary In The Junkyard.

Musical Style and Influences

[edit]

Wonderbug's sound draws heavily from 1990s grunge bands such as Nirvana and Sonic Youth, while incorporating elements of modern indie rock. The combination of melancholic melodies, dual-fronted vocals and driving rhythms has sparked comparisons to modern acts like Wolf Alice and Sorry (band).

Live Performances

[edit]

Their live shows are characterized by an intimate connection with the audience and a raw, unpolished energy that reflects their DIY ethos. Their debut 15-date tour is scheduled for early 2025.
