In 2018, Mental Floss did an interview with Garfield creator Jim Davis in which Davis said "By virtue of being a cat, really, he’s not really male or female or any particular race or nationality, young or old."[1] [2]
Debate
[edit]On February 24, 2017, podcaster Virgil Texas would find the Mental Floss article about the interview with Jim Davis.[3] Virgil would then tweet about Davis' remarks regarding the gender of Garfield and he edited the Wikipedia article "Garfield (character)".[4]
Virgil's edit would be reverted by a Wikipedia editor in less than an hour of the edit being published.[1] A discussion would then start on the article's talk page about Garfield's gender.
The debate would result in the Wikipedia article being locked down.[1]
