WUnderground is an undergraduate satirical newspaper at Washington University in St. Louis. It remains the only satirical newspaper at Washington University, following The Dirge which ceased publication in the 1930s.[1]
Overview
[edit]WUnderground was founded in 2004 by students at Washington University. The newspaper publishes satirical headlines and articles about both university and world topics. Since its creation, WUnderground has published more than 400 articles and 50 print issues, the latter of which are distributed by WUnderground members on campus.[2]
Engagement
[edit]In 2008, WUnderground hosted vice presidential expert Joel Goldstein for an on-campus talk in collaboration with Washington University Political Review and a V.P. Debate Program Planning Committee.[3]
In 2009, the group co-sponsored a talk from newscasters at The Onion Chad Nackers and John Harris at Graham Chapel.[4][5]
During a campus protest on the day of the 2016 US presidential debate, a member of WUnderground held a sign reading "Polyamorists 4 Trump!"[6]
Controversy
[edit]In 2016, WUnderground unsuccessfully applied for a student union block funding petition of $1,389,533.12, reportedly in order to fund the purchase of a house in Clayton, Missouri, which did not receive the sufficient amount of signatures.[7]
Again, in 2019, the newspaper attempted to file a petition for $511,000 in order to purchase a boat, which sparked outcry on behalf of other Washington University student groups appealing for funds.[8]
