History

[edit]

, the export cashew processing industry was formed.

, the Vietnam Cashew Tree Association was officially established under the "Decision No. 346 NN-TCCB/QD dated 29/11/1990 of Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry of Vietnam (now Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam). Transaction name: "Vietnam Cashew Association". Abbreviated name: "VINACAS".

, Vietnam began exporting cashew kernels through China - an important neighboring market with the largest population in the world.

, The first shipments of cashew kernels "Made in Vietnam" were exported to the market USA - the world's largest market for cashew kernels.

, the first raw cashew nuts of Africa imported into Vietnam. Vietnam stopped exporting raw cashews through India.

, [[Prime Minister of Vietnam|The Prime Minister promulgated Decision No. 120/1999/QD-TTg dated May 7, 1999, approving the Scheme on development of the cashew industry up to 2010.

From 2002 to 2003, Vietnam's cashew industry has made a leap forward. Vietnam has become the world's second largest producer, processor and exporter of cashew kernels, after India.

are the first five biggest difficulties in the cashew industry in history. Overcoming difficulties, Vietnam achieved a cashew kernel export turnover of 418 million USD, continuing to be the world's second largest cashew kernel producer, processor and exporter, after India.

, Vietnam's cashew industry continues to develop. Vietnam became the world's largest exporter of cashew kernels, surpassing India.

, Vietnam achieved a cashew kernel export turnover of 651 million USD, for the second consecutive year Vietnam held the position of the world's largest cashew kernel exporter. Cashew production, processing and export have been stable. This year is a year with a strong shift in the investment structure in cashew processing techniques and technology, especially in the automatic silk peeling stage.

, the price of cashew kernels increased to a record, breaking the threshold of 3.5 USD/lb FOB, which helped the cashew industry complete the export plan 2 months in advance, the export turnover of cashew kernels reached 920 million USD, maintaining the position of the world's largest cashew kernel exporter for the third consecutive year. VINACAS implements the State-level Scientific and Technological Production Project: "Perfecting technology, designing and manufacturing automatic cashew nut peeling machines and cashew kernel silk peeling machines in the export cashew processing line". Code: KC.07.DA13/06-10.

is a year of difficulties and challenges for the cashew industry business community due to the impacts of the global financial crisis. Overcoming difficulties and challenges, Vietnam continues to maintain the position of the world's largest cashew kernel exporter for the fourth consecutive year. Cashew processing technology and equipment have been perfected, especially at the stage of separating cashew nut hard shells.

, for the first time, Vietnam achieved a cashew kernel export turnover of over 1 billion dollars – this year is the fifth consecutive year that Vietnam has maintained its position as the world's largest cashew kernel exporter. Vietnam Golden Cashew Festival - Binh Phuoc 2010 was held. The Global Regulation Council (GCC) was established and VINACAS is one of the founding members.

, These are the five biggest difficulties faced by Vietnam's cashew industry in history. Overcoming difficulties and challenges, Vietnam continues to maintain the position of the world's largest cashew kernel exporter for the sixth consecutive year. VINACAS completed the KC.07.DA13/06-10 project with excellent results, the movement to improve technology and cashew processing equipment developed strongly. The two basic stages of hard shell cutting and silk peeling are completed. Automatic color sorting equipment is widely used, contributing to improving productivity, quality, food hygiene and safety for cashew kernels for export.

, Cashew production, processing and export gradually recovered. This year is the seventh year in a row, Vietnam is the world's largest exporter of cashew kernels. VINACAS strengthens international cooperation through the successful organization of the International Cashew Customer Conference in Nha Trang with the largest scale ever.

, For the first time, Vietnam's cashew exports reached 2 billion USD. This year is the eighth consecutive year, Vietnam is the world's largest exporter of cashew kernels. For the first time, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Vietnam)|The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam coordinates with VINACAS to organize a national conference to commend good cashew farmers. This year is also the year of launching the program Vietnamese Cashew Value with the goal of stimulating domestic cashew nut consumption through promoting the nutritional values of cashew nuts.

, VINACAS successfully implemented the agricultural extension project Grafting and renovating cashew orchards in 2 provinces Binh Phuoc and Dong Nai with the goal of achieving a minimum of 3 tons/ha of cashews after grafting and renovating. The "Vietnamese Cashew Value" forum was held for the first time in Ho Chi Minh City. The movement of deep processing and promotion of domestic cashew nut consumption has taken a new development. Cashew processing has made a leap due to achievements in cashew processing technology and equipment. Vietnam continues to maintain the position of the world's largest cashew exporter with a record export turnover of 2.2 billion USD of cashew products.

, [[Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Viet Nam)|The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam issued Decision No. 579/QD-BNN-TT dated 13/2/2015 on approving the planning for the development of the cashew industry to 2020 and orientation to 2030. The Vietnam Cashew Association is approved by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Vietnam)|The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam is interested in supporting the development of the cashew garden grafting and renovation project. This is also the year that cashew kernel exports reached a new record with an export turnover of 2.5 billion USD of cashew products[2]

, surpassing the rice industry, the cashew industry achieved an export turnover of 2.86 billion USD (the highest ever until then), the processing output of 1.58 million tons of raw cashew nuts, and the export of 348 thousand tons of cashew kernels. The line of deep-processed products has been promoted, domestic consumption and export have an impressive growth rate. VINACAS launched the Project on Cleaner Production, Food Safety and Hygiene for the cashew industry in the period of 2016-2020. Some VINACAS member enterprises expand investment in overseas raw material areas. A number of large corporations in the world participate in investing in cashew processing factories in Vietnam. Cashew processing enterprises began to promote cooperation programs in the production and consumption of agricultural products through models such as cooperatives, associated with the criteria of linking 4 houses: State - Scientists - Entrepreneurs - Farmers.[3]

In 2017, The Wall Street Journal (USA) published an article titled "How Cashews Explain Globalization," which includes the following excerpt: "Today, Vietnam is the king of cashews globally, thanks to advanced processing technology, surpassing India. Vietnam has become the world's leading center for processing and exporting cashew nuts, accounting for over 50% of the world's raw cashew supply. The global cashew processing hub has shifted from Kollam, India, to Vietnam." Vietnam exported 362,700 tons of cashew kernels, achieving an export turnover of 3.62 billion USD. Vietnamese cashews are exported to 95 countries and territories worldwide, continuing to maintain a market share of over 60% of the total global cashew kernel export value (approximately 5.5 billion USD). Cashews hold the top position among Vietnam's key agricultural export products, ranking above vegetables and fruits, coffee, rice, and pepper. They are selected as one of the three major export commodities of Vietnam to participate in the "Cashews of Vietnam" program, aimed at promoting the image and brand of Vietnamese cashews globally through national trade promotion programs. The International Cashew Conference 2017 in Phu Quoc welcomed 500 delegates from 40 countries and territories worldwide. With the theme "When thinking of cashews, think of Vietnam," the conference highlighted the role and position of the Vietnamese cashew industry on the international stage. VINACAS continues to strengthen bilateral and multilateral cooperation with international organizations and cashew industry representatives from major producing, processing, and consuming countries such as GCC, INC, AFI, ACA (Australia), ACA (Africa), CCA, AEC-CI, NCAN, etc. The Cambodian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries signed a memorandum of understanding with VINACAS regarding VINACAS's support for seeds and techniques, aiming for 1 million tons of raw cashew nuts over the next 10 years. The program accompanying farmers (with a core focus on intensive cultivation and improving cashew orchards according to good agricultural practices and organic production) continues to receive attention from central and local government leaders and cashew-growing farmers.

, Despite many challenges, the Vietnamese cashew industry still exported nearly 400,000 tons of cashew kernels, with a turnover of over 3.5 billion USD to more than 90 countries and territories. At the 10th International Cashew Conference 2018 in Ha Long City, VINACAS welcomed approximately 400 delegates from 50 countries and territories worldwide. In addition to trade promotion, brand promotion, connecting businesses domestically and internationally, and developing exports, VINACAS continued to strengthen bilateral and multilateral cooperation with international organizations and cashew industry representatives from major cashew-producing, processing, and consuming countries. According to the memorandum of understanding signed between the Cambodian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and VINACAS, the association has intensified cooperative activities, including providing consulting, training, sending technical experts to Cambodia, and donating 18,000 elite cashew seedlings from Vietnam (selected from reputable nurseries in Binh Phuoc and Dong Nai) to Cambodia. However, this was also the year when the international raw cashew nut market experienced the most significant fluctuations ever, with hundreds of thousands of tons of raw cashew nuts imported into Vietnam and India in Q2/2018 having to wait at ports and bonded warehouses for a long time before being cleared. The main reasons were issues with product quality and difficulties in credit for importing companies.

, both cashew kernel exports and raw cashew imports saw strong growth. Not only did Vietnam maintain its position as the world leader in cashew kernel exports, but it also set a new record with 459,500 tons of cashew kernels exported, a 16.65% increase compared to the same period last year. Raw cashew imports also rose to 1,677,022 tons, marking a 32.93% increase compared to the previous year. The 11th International Cashew Conference in Hue City was a great success: despite the change in the timing of the event, it was held professionally and attracted nearly 250 delegates from 30 countries and territories across Europe, the Americas, Asia, Africa, and Vietnam. VINACAS, in collaboration with the Ministry of Science and Technology and related sectors, issued the Raw Cashew Nut Standard (TCVN 12380 - 2018), which is significant for inspecting, evaluating, and classifying the quality of imported raw cashews and handling trade disputes. Many companies have updated their management practices and developed processing procedures in line with standards from developed countries, particularly enhancing social responsibility with certifications such as SMETA and BRC, ensuring export quality meets the high demands of global markets. VINACAS has brought together leading companies in the cashew industry to strengthen cooperation in production, business, and market regulation. For the first time, a Vietnamese company made a significant impact on the global cashew market with the "TL176" deal, participating in a bid to import 176,000 tons of raw cashew nuts from the Tanzanian government for the 2018 season.

, The COVID-19 pandemic has had a strong impact on all aspects of the world and the global cashew industry. Despite many complicated fluctuations, Vietnam's cashew industry still maintains cashew kernel production and export activities. Vietnam has exported 515 thousand tons of cashew kernels of all kinds, worth 3.21 billion USD, up 13% in volume, but down 2.3% in value compared to 2019, maintaining the No. 1 position in cashew kernel exports in the world. Celebrating the 30th anniversary of its establishment, VINACAS has imprinted its mark on the history of the development of the cashew industry. "When it comes to cashew nuts, think about Vietnam; Talking about the cashew industry, talking about VINACAS". Vietnam has affirmed its position as the No. 1 supplier of quality cashew nuts to the world; is the world's largest importer of raw cashews; It is the world's most advanced manufacturer and exporter of cashew processing technology equipment,...

, Overcoming difficulties and challenges from the COVID-19 epidemic with the new variant Delta, Delta+, Vietnam's cashew industry continues to maintain positive growth in cashew production, processing and export, exceeding the cashew export target set by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of 3.6 billion USD, specifically, it reached 3,659 billion USD, an increase of over 14% compared to 2020. Vietnam continues to hold the world's No. 1 position in cashew kernel exports with over 80% of the total global cashew kernel export; cashew nuts are the main export agricultural product of Vietnam, continuing to maintain the No. 1 position in the main agricultural products (plants) group, including: cashew nuts, vegetables, rice, coffee, pepper. In key markets out of a total of over 100 export markets around the world, Vietnamese cashew nuts are holding a dominant market share (in the US and China, 80% market share, 80% in the Netherlands, 60% in Germany,...). However, Vietnam continues to be a country that imports preliminarily processed cashew kernels in large quantities from African countries. In addition to exporting preliminarily processed cashew kernels through Vietnam, African countries have also increased the export of cashew kernels directly to Europe due to the advantage of geographical location,... Cashew nuts are agricultural products that are officially exported and mainly by sea. In 2021, about 60% of cashew nuts exported to China by sea. This is a big change because 10 years ago, most cashew nuts were exported to China by road. Regarding raw cashew nuts: this is the year that Vietnam has 2 records, the largest import record ever and the record imported from Cambodia (over 1 million tons of cashew nuts). Although there are many controversies, if according to this result, Vietnam will assert itself not only as: the world's leading supplier of cashews in both quantity and quality; countries with the most advanced cashew processing technology and equipment in the world; but also, the country has the most important role for the global raw cashew market: "Talk about Cashew, Think about Vietnam".
