Early Years
[edit]Born in Tzamarot Ayalon, near Tel Aviv in the nation of Israel on June 5, 1973 (Gregorian), 5th of Sivan, 5733 (Hebrew). He grew up internationally due to his riches multi-cultural heritage. His mother's roots were from Fresnillo, in the state of Zacatecas, Republic of Mexico.
He spent his childhood between the vineyards of his paternal grandparents in Kibbutz Yad HaShmona as well as Naperville and Orlando in the U.S.
After being gifted a vintage 8mm Aurora 215 1x8S Super 8 by his maternal grandfather when he was nine years old he began his fascination with film and became completely immersed in the process of filmmaking.[1]
Career
[edit]Commencing around the time he entered the prestigious and world famous Ma'Aleh School of Film, Television and the Arts he with the help of an influential relative in global telecommunications made introductions with key individuals i[2]n the the film in the international film industry and collaborating in various roles with local productions in his homeland and abroad working his way up from art director, contributing drafts of screenplays (mostly uncredited). Although his first producer title being granted after producing through the first offering of his production house Production 27 Studios financing, packaging and distributing the pulpy cult horror slasher Carved-The Slit Mouthed Woman (口裂け女, Kuchisake-Onna) based on the eery Japanese urban legend and leaving the titular character as the Freddy Krueger-like scissor-wielding, riddle spouting boogie woman of the far east. Despite only making $189,229 box office worldwide [3] it spawned a prequel and developed a cult following. Following this his production house contributed to the budgets of Israeli short film Schnitzel reminiscent of E.T. The Extraterrestrial two decades earlier.
Following later that year a collaboration with Egyptian filmmakers on the campy adaption of the Nutty Professor, Khetit Jimmy/Jimm's Plan خطة جيمى going on to earn 1,656,129 EGP or $83,866,372.56 USD.[4]
Upon subsequent success of this light hearted schmaltzy re-imagining came the mega production Terra Formars based on the original manga series of the same name pairing with Warner Brothers for worldwide distribution. but disappointingly only made $5,512,622 USD resulting in box office failure.[5]
Following this was the multi award winning adaption of the Anna Seghers Holocaust era novel and collaborating with acclaimed director Christian Petzhold bringing it to vibrant life and building on moving tale of love in the face-of national, political and cultural instability.[6]
Next came the horror tale Sadako (貞子), the reimagining of the The Ring series focusing on the viral video of the tormented soul of the girl at the bottom of the well which in this case spreads through a morbid and terrifying uploaded internet video gone viral uncovered by a jaded psychiatrist who is left to investigate. It later spawned three sequels, the final being filmed in 3-D.
Penimi returned to his signature fare of outlandish comedy fantasy/farce with The Washing Machine (Al- Ghasala/الغ) focusing on a Time Machine constructed from a washing machine. Soon this was followed up by Mousa a film connecting a human cybernetics engineer with his all too human-like robotic creation. Reminiscent of Short Circuit, Chappie but with a bit of Iron Man schtick thrown in.[7]
Penimi's production house is currently working on developing a film inspired by the classic Steve Miller Band fable put to song 'Take the Money and Run'.[8]
