Thomas & Friends is a British children's television franchise revolving around a cast of anthropomorphic steam engines who work on the Island of Sodor. Starting with a television series of the same name adapted by Britt Allcroft from The Railway Series (a book series created by the Reverend Wilbert Awdry) in 1984 and followed by a 2D animated reboot in 2021, several films and feature length specials have been produced, many of which being released theatrically, yearly or both.

This is a list of all films and specials released within the Thomas & Friends franchise.

Thomas & Friends

[edit]

Thomas and the Magic Railroad (2000)

[edit]

The franchise's first film, Thomas and the Magic Railroad, was released in July 2000, two years after the premiere of the show's fifth series. The film combines the model sets from the television series with real-life actors such as Alec Baldwin, Mara Wilson and Peter Fonda among others. It is an adaptation of both the Thomas & Friends television series as well as Shining Time Station, an American-exclusive series in which Thomas episodes were featured as segments narrated by the character Mr. Conductor in-universe. The film follows Mr. Conductor as he, his cousin Junior, a young girl named Lily Stone and Thomas the Tank Engine solve a mystery to find gold dust, which is used to travel between Shining Time and Sodor, all whilst being hunted down by the evil Diesel 10 who wants to put an end to steam engines.

The film was a critical and financial failure, and is thus the only Thomas film to be theatrically released worldwide.

Calling All Engines! (2005)

[edit]

The first direct-to-video special, Thomas & Friends: Calling All Engines!, was produced to celebrate the franchise's 60th anniversary. It follows the steam engines and diesel engines as they gradually learn to put their differences aside in order to work together and build a new airport. The special was said to be an "enormous success".[3]

The Great Discovery (2008)

[edit]

Thomas & Friends: The Great Discovery is the second special in the series, and the final Thomas & Friends production to solely use the model props before the switch to CGI in series 12. In the special, Thomas discovers an abandoned town called Great Waterton, but while restorations are underway, he grows jealous of a new engine named Stanley. The special is narrated by Hollywood actor Pierce Brosnan, who was originally planned to narrate the television series following The Great Discovery.[3][4]

Hero of the Rails (2009)

[edit]

The third special, Thomas & Friends: Hero of the Rails is also the first Thomas production to be produced using full 3D computer animation (commonly referred to as CGI), animated by Nitrogen Studios. Alongside this feat, this special introduces individual voice actors for the characters[5][6] for the first time since Thomas and the Magic Railroad. In the special, Thomas (voiced by Ben Small[7] in the UK dub and Martin Sherman in the US dub) discovers an old, broken-down Japanese engine named Hiro (voiced by Togo Igawa) and attempts to restore him without being caught by the villainous Spencer (voiced by Matt Wilkinson in the UK dub and Glenn Wrage in the US dub).

Misty Island Rescue (2010)

[edit]

The second CGI special and the fourth special overall, Thomas & Friends: Misty Island Rescue, was released on DVD and Blu-Ray on September 7, 2010, in UK theatres on October 2, 2010,[8] and US theatres on July 3, 2010.[9] In the film, Thomas is sent to the mainland but ends up on Misty Island by accident and must work with the Logging Locos to get home to Sodor.[8]

Day of the Diesels (2011)

[edit]

The fifth special, Thomas & Friends: Day of the Diesels, was premiered at Vue International in Eastleigh on September 17, 2011.[10] The film is the first to not star Thomas as the main protagonist; the film revolves around Percy as he creates a bond with the diesels, including Diesel 10.[11]

Blue Mountain Mystery (2012)

[edit]

The sixth special, Thomas & Friends: Blue Mountain Mystery, was released theatrically in the United Kingdom on September 1, and received a worldwide DVD release on September 3.[12] The film follows Thomas as he solves a mystery related to a narrow-gauge engine named Luke (voiced by Michael Legge), who makes his debut in this film. It is the final Thomas special to be animated by Nitrogen Studios.

King of the Railway (2013)

[edit]

Thomas & Friends: King of the Railway is the seventh special in the series and the first to be animated by Arc Productions, released in UK theatres and on DVD[13] in September of 2013. The film follows the trio of Thomas, Percy and James as they help restore a castle and meet Stephen, who is based on Stephenson's Rocket, and search for Stephen when he goes missing.[14]

Tale of the Brave (2014)

[edit]

Thomas & Friends: Tale of the Brave is the eighth special in the series, initially released on DVD on September 1, 2014.[15] In the film, Thomas discovers dinosaur footprints during a landslide, while Percy meets a new friend named Gator and learns to be brave.[16][17]

The Adventure Begins (2015)

[edit]

Thomas & Friends: The Adventure Begins was released in 2015 to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the franchise,[18] making it the second special to celebrate an anniversary. Because of this, it adapts stories from the first two books of The Railway Series: The Three Railway Engines and Thomas the Tank Engine.

Sodor's Legend of the Lost Treasure (2015)

[edit]

Thomas & Friends: Sodor's Legend of the Lost Treasure is the second Thomas & Friends special to be released in 2015, and was shown in theatres rather than going direct-to-video. Featuring Eddie Redmayne and John Hurt as guest voice actors,[19] the film sees Thomas discovering an old abandoned pirate ship and being caught up in a plot to steal pirate treasure.

The Great Race (2016)

[edit]

Journey Beyond Sodor (2017)

[edit]

Big World, Big Adventures! (2018)

[edit]

The fourteenth and final Thomas & Friends special, Thomas & Friends: Big World, Big Adventures! was released in UK theatres on July 20, 2018, in conjunction with the franchise's rebrand following the twenty-second series.[20] In the film, Thomas follows an Australian rally car named Ace (voiced by Peter Andre[21]) around the world, meeting an African tank engine named Nia along the way.
