- Comment: This draft or article is about an unreleased film. The film notability guideline identifies three stages in the production cycle for films:*1. Planned films that have not begun production (principal photography or animation). These planned films do not satisfy film notability.*2. Films that are confirmed by reliable sources to have begun production, but have not been released. These films are only notable if production itself satisfies general notability in terms of significant coverage. Mere mention of the start of production does not satisfy notability.*3. Films that have been released, whose notability is determined by reception and reviews, or a major notable award for excellence in some aspect of filmmaking. This film page must be evaluated based on general notability of production. The Book of Mormon is an upcoming American musical black comedy film directed by Trey Parker, based on the stage musical of the same name by Robert Lopez, Parker and Matt Stone. The film retells the story of two young Latter-day Saints are sent on a mission to convince the people of a small village in Uganda to become part of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Production
[edit]After the success of the musical in 2011, Trey Parker and Matt Stone disclosed that they planned to adapt the musical for the big screen.[1] In January 2013, Parker and Stone founded Important Studios, planning to produce films out of it, with an adaption of The Book of Mormon one of their projects.[2] In July 2015, Parker and Stone again reiterated their interest in adapting the musical of the film after the international success of the musical.[3] However, during the 2016 San Diego Comic Con Parker and Stone stated they weren't in any rush to adapt the musical.[4] In March 2017, Josh Gad, who starred as Elder Cunningham in the original Broadway cast, expressed his interest in reprising his role in a potential film adaptation.[5][6]
In February 2020, Parker and Stone announced they were working on a film titled Alma Junction.[7] Since Alma Junction is an actual unincorporated community in Park County, Colorado, United States, that located near the fictional small town of South Park (the title and subject of another successful animated television series and movie by Parker and Stone),[8] there was speculation as to whether the movie would involve the community or was Alma Junction just a working title.[9] Popular contemplation, which later proved correct, was the production was a movie adaptation of the theatrical musical comedy, The Book of Mormon.[10] Production was set to begin in March 2020, but like most other similar works in Hollywood and that the time, efforts were delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic.[10]
