Tales of Uplift and Moral Improvement is a Channel X comedy series produced for the BBC and broadcast in 2001 on BBC Choice.[1] The series starred Rik Mayall as Ffine Carmody,[2][3][4] and also featured Felicity Wren,[5] Lucinda Raikes and Thomas Wansey. It was written and created by Alex Kirk[6] and Simon Messingham (who both also acted in various roles),[7][8][9] and directed by Bob Baldwin (who previously directed Grim Tales, also starring Mayall).[10] The show's music was written by Julian Maurice Moore.[11] One series consisting of thirteen quarter-hour episodes was produced.[12]
Summary
[edit]Ffine Carmody (Mayall) narrates a series of stories of 'Uplift and Moral Improvement' set in Edwardian England,[13] with "barely suppressed fascism". In each episode, a grim story of an errant childhood is recounted.[14] Later, an additional episode, 'The Famous Girl' was recorded, featuring Liz Downes as Lady Cruella Lampard.[15]
