Born: 2003 (age 20)
Education: Harvard University (B.A. in Government, minor in English, expected 2024)
Known for: President of The Harvard Lampoon
Early Life and Education
[edit]Suchetas Bokil grew up in Alpharetta, Georgia, and graduated from Alpharetta High School before enrolling at Harvard University in 2020. Initially pursuing a career in politics, he majored in Government and Politics, inspired by his experience as a high school policy debater during a politically charged time in the U.S.
Despite his early focus on politics, Bokil had a long-standing love for comedy, particularly Saturday Night Live and late-night television. His interest in comedy writing deepened after joining The Harvard Lampoon during his sophomore year.
The Harvard Lampoon
[edit]Bokil first applied to The Harvard Lampoon in his freshman year but was cut in the final round. Undeterred, he reapplied in his sophomore year and was accepted. Over the next year, he became deeply involved in the publication, taking on various writing and editorial roles. In December 2023, he was elected president, making history as the first South Asian president in the organization’s 146-year history. He began his one-year term in January 2024.
The Harvard Lampoon has been a launching pad for many notable comedians and writers, including Conan O’Brien, Colin Jost, and Michael Schur, but Bokil has emphasized that his focus is on producing high-quality, humorous content rather than viewing the position as a stepping stone.
Career and Future Plans
[edit]Bokil has expressed interest in pursuing comedy professionally, having added an English minor to complement his Government major. He sees comedy and politics as interconnected, citing the success of politically charged late-night shows as an example of their overlap. Bokil is also a writer for the Harvard Political Review.[1]
Set to graduate in Spring 2024, Bokil plans to continue writing comedy material and potentially literary scripts, but remains committed to honing his craft through his current work at The Lampoon.
Personal Life
[edit]Bokil’s family and community in Alpharetta have been supportive of his career shift, though initially surprised by his transition from politics to comedy. He frequently returns home, where he enjoys reconnecting with former teachers and friends.
