Submission declined on 11 February 2024 by The Herald (talk). Thank you for your submission, but the subject of this article already exists in Wikipedia. You can find it and improve it at 2023–24 European windstorm season instead. Declined by The Herald 5 months ago. |
- Comment: Consider merging it with the parent article 2023–24 European windstorm season. Need for a standalone article is not justified. Discuss in talk page for splitting the article if needed. The Herald (Benison) (talk) 00:07, 11 February 2024 (UTC)

Storm Pia, known in Germany as Storm Zoltan,[2] was an extratropical cyclone which impacted Western Europe during December 2023. The seventeenth windstorm of the 2023–24 European windstorm season, Pia was first noted by the Danish Meteorological Institute on December 20. After affecting a large swath of Europe, it was last noted two days later.
Preparations[edit]
The Met Office issued a yellow warning for Northern Ireland since damaging gales of 45-55mph (72-88km/h) were expected.[3] Additionally, they also issued a yellow alert for a large swath of the British isles, with only the Southern portion of Eastern Anglia being immune.[4] In Ireland, Met Éireann hoisted weather warnings across the Republic.[3] The Deutscher Wetterdienst issued a Level II weather warning for Berlin.[5]
At Schipol Airport, over six hundred flights were cancelled.[6] In preparation for the storm, P&O Ferries cancelled several ferries between Cairnryan and Larne.[7] Authorities in Hamburg warned residents as the Elbe river overflowed.[8]
Impact[edit]
Northern Ireland[edit]
In County Down, trains from Bangor to Belfast were cancelled, while in Loughgall, the Drumilly Road was closed down due to a fallen tree.[3] At the height of the storm, Northern Ireland Electricity reported that around 6000 households lost power in Northern Ireland.[9]
Germany[edit]
Two fatalities occurred: one in Hildburghausen,[10] and another in Bunde.[11] In North Rhine-Westphalia, intense rainfall caused several places to be flooded, with the Elbe overflowing its banks.[8][12]
The Netherlands[edit]
One fatality occurred in the Netherlands when a tree fell on a woman who was riding a tandem bicycle.[13] An intense storm surge caused several coastal areas to suffer flooding, resulting in several dikes and storm surge barriers to be closed throughout the nation.[14]
Elsewhere[edit]
One death occurred in Klosterneuburg when a tree fell upon a 81-year old hunter. Minor power outages also occurred.[15] In Belgium, a Christmas tree fell down on a woman, killing her.[16] In Denmark, an 81-year old died due to a traffic accident while 26 others sustained injuries.[17]
