Tom Smith (born in Nottingham, England, 1994), professionally known as Son of Philip, is an award-winning electronic music producer, composer, mix engineer, mastering engineer, and record label owner based in Nottingham, previously based in London. His music style is associated with Techno, House, Electro and Ambient.

Biography

[edit]

Smith had his first exposure to electronic music at age 14 when a friend at secondary school introduced him to the Digital Audio Workstation, Propellerhead Reason. After completing secondary education in Nottingham, he went on to study Audio & Music Technology at The Confetti Institute of Creative Technologies, where he graduated with a First Class (Hons) degree and was awarded Best Music Production.[1]In his late teens and early twenties, Smith attended many rave parties, including Wigflex, a renowned techno event series in Nottingham.[2] There, he met Lukas Cole, owner of Wigflex[2], who later released Smith’s first tracks “MLP” and “Poltergeist” under his previous alias Medicut as part of the Wigflex City Monsters cassette compilation in 2015, alongside artists like Lone and Nathan Fake[3]. Smith’s debut EP Play Monotonous was released on Wigflex in 2021, including a remix by Actress.[4] Later that year, he collaborated with Lukas Wigflex to release the EP Me & Meds on Trouble Maker Records.[5][6]

In 2022, Smith co-founded the record label and event series Bliss Print with Liam Keydell. They organized multiple events, including an open-air day party at the Fox & Firkin in Lewisham, London.[7] Their music was compared to Four Tet by Mixmag in 2023.[8]

In 2024, Smith released his debut album Plastic Borough on Running Circle Records, which led to him being approached by film director Gürcan Keltek to score his film Yeni Safak Solarken (New Dawn Fades).[9] The film won the Independent Critics Award at Locarno Film Festival, and Smith was awarded Best Film Score at the Adana Film Festival.[10]

Smith has performed at notable music venues and festivals, including Fabric, Corsica Studios, The Lion & Lamb, The Love Inn, and Gottwood Festival.[11] He has also appeared on major radio shows such as Tom Ravenscroft’s Ravers Hour on BBC Radio 6 Music.[12] and Rinse FM.[13]
