Small Talk is a documentary feature film directed by Huang Hui-chen in 2016. It won the Teddy Award for Best Documentary at the 2017 Berlin International Film Festival and was also the first Taiwan documentary which represented to compete in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 90th Academy Awards.[1][2]
Synopsis
[edit]During the director's childhood, her mother, who is a lesbian, escaped from her father because of domestic violence. She took the director and her sister away from their father's search. The mother later earned a living as a red-clad shaman in a religious ritual known as Qian Wang Ge Zhen (牽亡歌陣, which is a soul-guiding singing array in a traditional funeral), and the sisters became part of this performance, leading a nomadic life. The film took 18 years for making, exploring the alienated mother-daughter relationship and revealing the wounds from the director's childhood.[2][3]
This documentary feature film originated from a documentary short film The Priestess Walks Alone.[3]
