Shreyas Sen is an Indian American Electrical and Computer Scientist, academic, and researcher. He is the Elmore Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Biomedical engineering (courtesy) at Purdue University.[1] He is renowned for his pioneering work in mixed-signal integrated circuit and systems, electromagnetism, and hardware security, particularly in the context of the Internet of Bodies (IoB),[2] as well as on USB-C[3] and the invention of Body-as-a-Wire technology,[4] commercialized as Wi-R by Ixana.[5]
Early Life and Education
[edit]Shreyas Sen received his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Georgia Tech.[6] His early research focused on mixed-signal circuits and systems for smart radios, and USB-C,[7] which laid the foundation for his later groundbreaking work on 'Wi-R'.[8] Prof. Sen joined Purdue University,[9] where he currently serves as the Director of the Center for Internet of Bodies (C-IoB) His research interests include sensing and communication circuits/systems, with applications in IoT, biomedical engineering, and security.
Professional Career
[edit]Shreyas Sen worked as a Research Scientist at Intel Labs, contributing to advancements in wireless communication. At Qualcomm, he worked in RFIC design. During his time at Rambus, he focused on communication circuit design. Currently, he is an Associate Professor in Biomedical Engineering and Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University. He is the Founder and CTO of Ixana, a company creating a new "Body-Internet" technology that's transforming how devices connect.
Prof. Sen serves in the technical program committee multiple flagship conferences of different societies including International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC), Custom Integrated Circuits Conference (CICC), Design Automation Conference (DAC), Computer and Communications Security (CCS) (Computer security conference), International Microwave Symposium (IMS), Design, Automation and Test (DATE), International Symposium on Low Power Electronics and Design (ISLPED),International Conference on Computer-Aided Design (ICCAD), International Test Conference (ITC), and VLSI Design. He also served as an Associate Editor for several journals, including the IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits and Nature Scientific Reports. He is also a Senior Member of IEEE and a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society.
Inventions and Contributions
[edit]Prof. Sen is best known for inventing the Electro-Quasistatic Human Body Communication (EQS-HBC)[10] technology, also known as "Body as a Wire." This innovative technology enables high-speed data communication using the human body as a medium. His work in this area has earned him numerous accolades, including the MIT Technology Review's top 10 Indian Inventor Worldwide (Innovators Under 35) under 35 (MIT TR35 India) Award in 2018[11] and the Georgia Tech 40 Under 40 Award in 2022.[12]
In addition to EQS-HBC, Prof. Sen has contributions to the development of USB-C technology during his tenure at Intel Labs, for which he received the Intel Labs Quality Award in 2012. In 2023. during iphone's adoption of USB-C, prof Sen article highlighted the journey and importance of this technology.[13][14]
To commercialize EQS-HBC[15] technology, Prof. Sen founded Ixana. Under his leadership, Ixana has received multiple awards, including two CES Innovation Awards in 2024[16] and the Indiana Startup of the Year Mira Award in 2023.[17]
Shreyas Sen and his team at Purdue University developed an innovative wireless communication technique for neural implants called biphasic quasistatic brain communication. This method enhances efficiency by avoiding transduction losses, enabling seamless neural communication.[18]
Research Areas
[edit]Human Body Communication[19]: The vision is to use the human body as a wire for the lowest-energy and physically secure Body Area Network (BAN). Achievements in this area include the invention of EQS-HBC, the first bio-physical model of EQS-HBC, the development of the lowest energy BAN IC (100x less than Bluetooth Low Energy), the creation of the first sub-uW + physically secure BAN IC, the innovation of communication through touch, and the establishment of the first EQS Inter-Body Coupling Theory.
Electro-Magnetic Hardware Security: The vision is to explore physical analog/mixed signal/EM security vulnerabilities and countermeasures. Notable achievements include the development of the first >1B MTD against EM/Power Side Channel Attacks (SCA), the introduction of cross-device Machine Learning SCA (X-DeepSCA), the creation of the first RF-Physically Unclonable Function,[20] and the innovation of the first ML-SCA physical countermeasure.
Edge-Intelligence & IoT: The vision is to achieve resource-constrained IoT Edge Intelligence to overcome communication energy bottlenecks. Achievements in this area include the design of the first self-optimizing computation and communication SoC, achieving >500x power savings in large-area (Purdue Wide) RC-IoT Sensor Network, developing the concept of context-aware & zero-margin communication, and the advancement of mixed-signal neurons that allow orders of magnitude energy savings.
Biomedical & Neural Sensor Nodes[21]: The vision is towards battery-free secure, connected, and intelligent body electronics. Key achievements include the creation of the highest resolution time-domain biosensor, the development of the first wearable swallow sensor node, a detailed EM-wave biosensor review paper, and advancements in animal body communication leading to ULP neural recordings.
High-Speed IO & Adaptive RFIC: The vision is to develop ULP high-speed communication circuits for HSIO 5G and beyond. Achievements include impacting the design of USB-C type, the creation of the first 32 Gbps mm-scale proximity connector, and the development of the first zero-margin adaptive radio.

[edit]Prof. Sen has authored over 200 journal and conference papers[43] and holds 25 patents granted or pending[44]. His work has been featured in more than 250 news releases worldwide and has been presented at TEDx Indianapolis and NASDAQ live Trade Talks at CES 2023.[45] His work on Body Internet was highlighted that one day, humans might be able to use their touch and thoughts instead of screens to interact with the digital world.[46] Inspired by human body, wearable AI can be more efficient.
