Pop-up Translations

[edit]

On March 1, 2024, Furigana and Romaji pop-up translations were added.[7]

'Quiz Mode' & More

[edit]

On May 21, 2024, the "'Quiz Mode' & More" update was released. It added a Quiz Mode which allows you to study your vocabulary by answering multiple choice questions in exchange for coins.

Another feature is the ability to export your photos as .jpegs and transparent .png flash-cards.

In the game's 'Find Mode', a list of your incorrect answers will be shown at the end. This was also added into the new 'Quiz Mode'.

'Find Mode' and 'Quiz Mode' now allow you to swap between Reading & Listening, Reading or Listening modes.

Extra answers are also accepted in 'Find Mode'.

You can change the size of the pop-up translations using the settings menu.

An "Invert X or Y-Axis" option was added, and the tutorial and credits were updated. Various bug fixes were also implemented.[8]

Flash-Card Viewer Update

[edit]

On August 4, 2024, the "Flash-Card Viewer Update" was released. It allows you to view your photo flash-cards from your album in full-screen. Furthermore, the transition time between day and night in the game was slowed down, giving players more time to enjoy the sky's colors and snap photos of it. Various bug fixes were also implemented.[9]

Reception

[edit]

Reception of "Shashingo: Learn Japanese with Photography" is generally positive, with players praising it as a good way to learn the Japanese language; however, some people have also criticized it, deeming the game "lacking".[10]

Alana Hagues of Nintendo Life called it, "a chill, fun, and accessible educational game that combines photography with language learning".[11]

Before the game's release, Beth Nicholls of Digital Camera World called it "a potential game-changer (pun intended) for English speakers who are looking to learn Japanese in a more engaging and entertaining way, compared with the traditional mind-numbing online courses for language learning or even smartphone apps with relentless notifications and pestering, such as Duolingo."[12]

Jayden Hellyar of Game Crater praised the game's visuals and called it "a great way to supplement traditional language learning methods or to simply have fun while exploring the beauty and culture of Japan."[13]

Sales

[edit]

On August 31, 2024, the game was reported to have sold 25,000 units on Steam.[14]
