Sir Robert de Holland (1246 - 7 Oct 1311)[1][2] [3] is the son of Thurstan de Holland [4] and Miss Kellet.[5]

He is the brother of Lord William Holland of Sharples, Roger de holland, Adam de Holland, and Margaret Holland who married Adam de Banastre Banastre Rebellion husband also of John Blackburn and Robert de Hephale.

The township of Up Holland, distinguished by the prefix from Down Holland near Halsall, is the largest in the parish, having an area of 1,896 ha (4,685 acres).[6]

The Hollands of Up Holland[7] derive from a Matthew de Holland, who is the propagator of the Holland family from Lancashire England.

Robert married Elizabeth de Samlesbury [8] daughter of William de Samlesbury and Avina Notton.

They had the following children:

  • Avina de Holland, married Adam Austyn of Ireland,[9] [10]
  • Robert Holland, 1st Baron Holand married Maud de la Zouche
  • Margery Holland married, John la Warre
  • William Holland
  • Allan Holland (Hollands of Conway)[11] a
  • Joan Holland, married Sir Edmund Talbot, Sir Hugh Dutton of Dutton, and Sir John Radcliffe.

a According to Bernard Holland a branch of the Hollands, were established at Conway in Wales since the late 14th Century. It is believed to have descended from Alan Holland, a son of Robert Holland of Upholland and a brother of Robert, the first Lord Holland, who was beheaded at Henley, in 1328.
