Ravindra Venshi (Kannada: ರವೀಂದ್ರ ವೆಂಶಿ) is an Indian film director, critic, writer, and artist who primarily works in Kannada cinema.
Early work
[edit]Ravindra Venshi's directorial debut was the film Idu Katheyalla Jeevana.[1] However, due to unspecified issues, the production was halted after completing 50% of the shooting.
Undeterred, Venshi moved on to his next project, March 23: Anti Corruption Day.[2] This film was notable for being the first in Karnataka to be shot entirely using the Red One camera. Although the film was completed and cleared by the censors, it remains unreleased to this day. Breakthrough (2016) After a hiatus following two unsuccessful ventures in 2013, Ravindra Venshi returned to direction in 2016 with the film Putani Safari.[3] This movie marked a turning point in his career, as it became a successful venture, running to packed houses.[4] In 2017, Ravindra Venshi directed an experimental film titled Kaivalya,[5] loosely based on Anton Chekhov's short story The Bet. Notably, the film features only one character throughout, a bold and innovative storytelling approach. Although Kaivalya was completed in 2017, it remains unreleased, thereby missing the opportunity to be recognized as a pioneering single-actor film in the Kannada cinema industry.[6]
In 2018, Ravindra Venshi directed the movie Varnamaya.[7][8]
In 2019, Venshi began working on his dream project, Mata,[9][10] a docudrama-style film that was shot over a span of three years. The film's team scouted over 200 Mata monasteries for locations and shot the movie in 25 districts across Karnataka. This ambitious project showcases Venshi's dedication to storytelling and his willingness to push boundaries in filmmaking. Despite being a passion project, Mata received a lukewarm response at the box office upon its release.[11] Furthermore, the film faced controversy and criticism from certain Swamijis, who raised objections to the movie's content.[12] In 2022, Ravindra Venshi had two films released: Mata and Vasanthi Nalidaga.[13][14] In 2024, Venshi directed two more films: Night Curfew,[15] starring Malashree[16] and Taekwondo Girl,[17] a children's film.
Filmmaking style
[edit]Ravindra Venshi is known for his eclectic and versatile filmmaking style, refusing to be pigeonholed into a specific genre or approach. He has explored a wide range of genres, including children's films, action, horror, sports drama, docudrama, and thriller, among others.[citation needed]
Notably, Venshi's films are characterized by a distinct absence of smoking characters, reflecting his unique perspective and values. Additionally, he has demonstrated a willingness to experiment and push boundaries, making each film a distinct and unpredictable experience.[citation needed]

- Sayuva munna nodalebekaada 101 kannada chitragaLu (101 Must-watch Kannada Movies Before You Die)[18] - a comprehensive guide to essential Kannada films.[19] To write this book, Venshi watched over 2500 movies, showcasing his dedication to Kannada cinema. - Chitra-vichitra[20] - a book about world cinema, focusing on special and unique films.
