The National Maritime Foundation (NMF) is an intellectual think tank in India for comprehensive policy level research on the matter of maritime security, it's need was long felt to redress the historical neglect of the government on the pertailing issues of maritime security, however it's area of work include entire spectrum of disciplines that are of India's maritime interest like ship-building, port modernisation, disaster management at high seas, laws of the sea as well as a proactive approach to curtail marine pollution.

It was inaugurated on 15th of February, 2005, by the then Defence Minister of India Shri Pranab Mukherjee, though it's an autonomous think tank involved in strategic research but it's intellectual and organisational development is backed by the Indian Navy and the Ministry of Defence. In the years after it's establishment the foundation has grown much from it's embryonic form to a world class platform for not only quality research in the maritime domain but also to a platform for the advocacy, discourse and debate on the maritime development and stability between various intergovernmental organisations and academic institutions.[1] [2]
National Maritime Foundation also conducts the renowned international conference for the military practitioners and academias – the Indo-Pacific Regional Dialogue (IPRD) back from the year 2018, which discusses upon various dynamic and contemporary issues.[3]
Objectives
[edit]Various domains in the primary work list of the foundation are research for a safe maritime future, advocating for the sea laws, convening and sharing of pan international issues and ideas in the maritime domain along with this there is emphasis on the Geopolitics and Marine Technology too. The foremost aspect is of advising the policy makers in the government, various policy sharpers and the public awareness in large. [4]
Vision
[edit]The mission of the foundation is to be the foremost source of advocacy and intellect, for holistic and sustainable development of India's maritime capabilities and securing them further in an uncertain world with altering geopolitical equations and balance of powers.[5] [6]
