Mustapha Salihu (born December 17, 1976) is a Nigerian politician serving as National Vice Chairman (North-East)[1][2] of the All Progressives Congress since 2016.[3]
Early life and education
[edit]Mustapha Salihu was born on December 17, 1976, in Jimeta-Yola North, Adamawa State. He attended Yelwa-Jimeta Primary School. He holds a Ph.D. in Conflict, Peace, and Strategic Studies.
Political career
[edit]Mustapha Salihu has been active in Nigerian politics, serving as the National Vice-Chairman (North-East) of the All Progressives Congress since 2016. In 2023, he was briefly suspended by the party over allegations of anti-party activities[4]. However, the suspension was later lifted, with the party acknowledging that it was done in error.[2][5][6]
2020 All Progressives Congress crisis
[edit]In 2020, the All Progressives Congress experienced a significant leadership crisis. Following a court order suspending National Chairman Adams Oshiomhole, a power struggle ensued within the party. Chief Victor Giadom, Deputy National Secretary, obtained a court order appointing himself as the acting National Chairman. This order also designated Mustapha Salihu as the acting National Secretary.[7] While Salihu supported Oshiomhole's suspension[8], he later publicly distanced himself from Chief Victor Giadom's court order, asserting that he was not a party to the legal proceedings and expressed support for the North-East zone's nomination of Architect Waziri Bulama as the acting National Secretary. Salihu's statement emphasized the need for unity within the party during a time of crisis and underscored the importance of resolving the leadership issue peacefully.[9][10][11][12]
In 2022, the All Progressives Congress initiated a reconciliation tour in North-East Nigeria. Led by Comrade Mustapha Salihu, the party's National Vice Chairman for the region, the tour aimed to address internal conflicts and foster unity within the party ahead of the 2023 general elections.[13]
National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and All Progressives Congress National Vice Chairman (North-East) Mustapha Salihu commended Adamawa State All Progressives Congress officials for their unwavering loyalty and commitment to the party.[14]
