Monkeycore is a niche subgenre of metal music that blends elements of thrash, doom, death metal, and hardcore. It was coined around 2012 by the German band Enraged Monkeys, who sought to create a sound that was difficult to categorize, combining aggressive, chaotic, and experimental musical elements. This genre is characterized by its lack of rigid structure, focusing on high-energy performances and raw, unfiltered sound.

Origins

[edit]

Monkeycore originated with Enraged Monkeys, a band formed by members of the metal bands SUBHUMAN and Die Naturtrüben. During a jam session in 2012, the band began experimenting with fusions of various metal subgenres, aiming to craft a unique sound. The term "Monkeycore" was coined as a humorous yet fitting label for their chaotic and primal musical style. By 2013, the band had completed its lineup with lead vocalist Istvan Ladanyi, and they established Monkeycore as their signature sound.[1]

Musical Characteristics

[edit]

Monkeycore is known for its eclectic fusion of thrash, death, and doom metal, underpinned by hardcore influences. Songs often feature doomy, ascending patterns, transitioning from clean, punctuated notes to heavy distortion. Blast beats, shredding melodies, and driving, catchy riffs are common. The genre is heavily reliant on its live performance energy, often evoking headbanging that escalates into moshing and circle pits.[2]

Lyrically, Monkeycore deals with socio-political themes and personal struggles, presented through a mix of aggressive growls and clean vocals. The themes often revolve around breaking societal constraints and rejecting false values, as seen in Enraged Monkeys' debut album No Compromise (2021).[3]

Key Band: Enraged Monkeys

[edit]

Enraged Monkeys remains the most influential band in the Monkeycore genre. Their debut album, No Compromise, released in 2021, exemplifies the genre's raw and aggressive nature. The album was recorded live to capture the intensity of their performance and featured songs like "The Sky is Down" and "Leave the Sea," which have become synonymous with Monkeycore's chaotic energy.[2]

Live Performances

[edit]

Live performances are central to the Monkeycore experience. The genre's driving rhythms, punctuated by rising tension and distorted sounds, create an atmosphere where crowds are drawn into headbanging, eventually leading to intense mosh pits or "walls of death." This primal and energetic engagement is a defining feature of Monkeycore shows.[4]

Conclusion

[edit]

Though Monkeycore remains a niche subgenre within the broader metal scene, its creation by Enraged Monkeys represents an innovative blending of metal influences, grounded in intense live performances and raw energy. The band's contribution has solidified Monkeycore as a distinct and chaotic branch of the metal genre.[3]
