Medicinal Media

[edit]

Medicinal Media is nonprofit committed to creating and elevating media that supports mental health. It is designed to serve as a resource that offers solace, support, and comfort for those struggling with mental health issues in the form of poetry, art, film, dance, video games, apps, music, books, podcasts, and various other forms of media. The site functions as a mental health resource hub, and has contracted over 150 creative collaborators from more than 20 countries. The roster of global contributors continues to grow.

Melissa Wilson, along with her partner, Mike Wilson, founded Medicinal Media. Melissa states that the platform was designed to allow anyone with a cellular phone to access essential information that can help them get through challenging moments.[1]. Site visitors who are experiencing a more immediate crisis are directed to seek urgent assistance by calling 911 or 988 in the U.S., or the equivalent in their country[2].

Origin

[edit]

Founded in 2023 by Mike Wilson and Melissa Wilson, and backed by Nanea Reeves along with prominent civil rights attorney Terry Gross, Medicinal Media's primary focus is to show users "how to use media more mindfully."[3] Wilson has been a staunch advocate for mental health and wellness for many years, even during his years as a video game executive[4].

Company name

[edit]

Wilson coined the term "Medicinal Media" and began to develop the project during his time at DeepWell DTx [5]where Wilson was also exploring other forms of media - - namely video games - - to address mental health issues. He originally created Medicinal Media to employ digital media as a tool for healing during the ongoing mental health crisis[6]

Board members

[edit]

As Medicinal Media's founder, Mike Wilson was recognized by Forbes magazine as a leader of the purpose-driven entrepreneurship wave, stating, "We're witnessing a paradigm shift in the global business landscape as more entrepreneurs recognize the need to address pressing social and environmental issues."[7] In May 2024, Medicinal Media brought Jada Pinkett-Smith and actress and yoga teacher Adriene Mishler onto their board, with Pinkett-Smith stating, "I love Medicinal Media because it...uses joyous art...to fill the gaps of traditional mental healthcare, especially for those with limited or no access."[8]
