Mass Effect is an upcoming action role-playing video game developed by BioWare and published by Electronic Arts. It is the fifth major game in the Mass Effect franchise.
Development
[edit]Although Mass Effect: Andromeda was not designed with specific plans for future installments, BioWare's original intention was to continue adding to the series. However, following the game's disappointing commercial and critical reception, reports arose that BioWare Edmonton would be taking a break from the franchise to focus on their new IP, Anthem, and that BioWare Montreal would focus on other games under the EA umbrella, such as Star Wars Battlefront II.[1] In August 2017, BioWare Montreal was merged with EA's Motive Studios, casting further doubt on the future of the Mass Effect franchise.[2] However, former series creative director Casey Hudson, who departed from BioWare in 2014 but returned following Mass Effect: Andromeda's release, later stated that he wanted the series to continue.[3] As of November 7, 2020, a veteran team at BioWare is working on the next chapter of the Mass Effect universe.[4]
As part of the 2020 "N7 Day", BioWare affirmed that a new Mass Effect was in development at the studio.[5] An announcement trailer was released on 11th December 2020, hinting at a sequel to the original trilogy.[6][7][8][9][10] BioWare released a further teaser for the game in the form of a poster on the 2021 "N7 Day", which depicts a group of characters walking away from a ship which bears the letters SFX towards a mysterious crater.[11]
In 2022, a new poster was released. In 2023, a teaser trailer was published, with a 34-second video of someone walking in a room. On 7 November, it confirmed it would be a quiet day so that attention would not be taken away from Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
After the release of Dragon Age: The Veilguard in October 2024, Bioware revealed the studio will focus on production of the next Mass Effect game.[12]
