Mary Free Bed at Covenant HealthCare is a specialized rehabilitation hospital in Saginaw, Michigan, born from a partnership between Covenant HealthCare and Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation. [edit]The roots of Mary Free Bed trace back to 1891 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, when a group of women sought to help children access essential healthcare. Their efforts began humbly with a black purse and a simple request: for anyone named “Mary” to contribute ten cents. This initiative grew, leading to the funding of a single hospital bed, affectionately called the “Mary Free Bed.” Over time, the organization expanded its mission, becoming a leader in rehabilitative care.[1]
In 2018, Mary Free Bed partnered with Covenant HealthCare to bring advanced rehabilitation services to Saginaw. This partnership was further solidified with the opening of a $40.7 million facility in 2021, reflecting their commitment to the community.[2]
State-of-the-Art Facilities
[edit]The main building features 60 private inpatient rooms, designed to accommodate patients with complex medical needs, including those recovering from brain injuries. Physical therapy gyms are equipped with advanced technology on each floor, catering to a wide range of rehabilitation needs. Outpatient services are also available, including specialized areas for orthotics, prosthetics, and bionics.
The facility is home to cutting-edge technology like the Ovation Interactive Treadmill—one of only 10 in the U.S.—and the Lokomat, STARscanner, and equipment for Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing.[3]

Outpatient therapy focuses on ongoing recovery for conditions that do not require overnight stays, while inpatient therapy provides specialized care in 60 private rooms, each equipped for critical care patients.[4]
Pediatric services are a significant focus, with a dedicated therapy gym featuring child-sized equipment. Services include the Pediatric Feeding Program, augmentative communication, and autism evaluation, all tailored to support recovery in a child-friendly environment.
