Lt Gen Joy Chatterjee is a paediatric anaesthetist trained in liver transplant anaesthesia, intensive care specialist, and medical administrator, with special interest in labour analgesia and post-operative pain relief in infants and neonates.[citation needed]

Education

His MBBS, AFMC are from the University of Poona and his MD from Mumbai University. He has 2 years' post-doctoral training in paediatric anaesthesia at BJ Wadia Hospital for Children, Mumbai, and a fellowship in liver transplant anaesthesia from Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Princess Diana Hospital for Children, Birmingham, UK.[citation needed]

Career

He worked in armed forces hospitals at Mumbai, Delhi, Kochi, Visakhapatnam, Goa, Chilka, and Jamnagar. At INHS Asvini, Mumbai he managed an 825-bed hospital.[citation needed]

He served as Principal Director Medical Services (Personnel & Material) and later, Additional Director General Medical Services, Indian Navy, and worked as Command Medical Officer, Southern Naval Command. He was a tenanted appointment of Director General Hospital Services, Armed Forces as Surgeon Vice Admiral. As Lt General, he directed the flagship hospital of the Indian Army - the Army Hospital Research & Referral (R&R), New Delhi, with 33 specialty departments and 1200 beds.[citation needed]

He was a pioneer member of the first liver transplant team of the Indian Armed Forces, carrying out more than 100 liver transplants (both living donor and cadaveric donor) in adults and babies, with success rates matching international figures.[citation needed]

He was responsible for the planning, preparation and equipping of 140 military hospitals nationwide during the first and second COVID-19 waves. As Director General Medical Services Army during the second COVID-19 wave in 2021, he steered the management of Covid-19 cases.[citation needed]

He has taught at postgraduate level and is an examiner in Maharashtra University of Health Sciences and Delhi University for MD (Anaesthesiology).[citation needed]
