Joseph Anthony Street (born 19 April 1988) is a British actor, model and filmmaker. His most notable acting credits include performances as Kurt Daniels and Damien DeHaan in the horror films Escape from Cannibal Farm (2017) and The House of Violent Desire (2018) respectively, though he is better known for playing AFC Richmond footballer Paul Reynolds in the Apple TV+ comedy Ted Lasso.
He has also appeared in a number of theatre shows, most significantly as the lead role of Edmund Blackadder in the 2022 stage adaptation of Blackadder Goes Forth[1] at the Pump House Theatre and Arts Centre.
Early life and education
[edit]Street was born on 19 April 1988 in Worcester, attending The King's School, Worcester from 1996-2006.[2] An avid footballer, he captained the school's first XI for the duration of his final year while also playing semi-professionally at club level for Pershore Town FC (2005-06), and then Bromyard Town FC (2006-07). After leaving home at the age of nineteen, he moved to Swansea to study for a BSc Sports Science degree at Swansea University where he graduated with a 2:2 in 2010.
While at university in 2008, Street suffered a ruptured ACL and meniscus tear which prompted him to take a step back from football and sign up to the university drama society. He references this moment, and a trip with his mother to the London Palladium to see the 1994 London Revival of Oliver! fourteen years prior, as the two biggest influences behind pursuing a career in the creative arts.
Career
[edit]Acting and Modelling
[edit]Street first entered the world of film and television in 2008 as an extra on Channel 4 soap spin-off Hollyoaks Later. In 2011, while filming in another extras role on Wrath of The Titans, he took part in the Mister Wales 2011[3][4][5] pageant where he finished first runner up, using the event to shoe-horn his way into the modelling industry. He would later represent Wales at Mr World 2016.[6][7][8] Alongside his career as a model, Street started working as a stand-in for a number of higher profile actors including Chris Hemsworth, Ryan Reynolds & Callum Turner[9] before landing his first acting role in Dark Temple Motion Pictures' Escape From Cannibal Farm (2017) for director Charlie Steeds. Street collaborated once more with Steeds on his next picture The House of Violent Desire (2018).
In August 2019, Street was invited to attend a casting day at Hayes & Yeading United F.C. for new Apple TV+ production, Ted Lasso. After being shortlisted by Hayes' manager Paul Hughes, he was invited to West London Film Studios to audition in front of members of the production team. Following the audition, Street was offered the chance to join the show and would appear in the role of Paul Reynolds throughout all three seasons.
In June 2020, as part of the BFI Network x BAFTA Crew Mentoring programme,[10] Street joined a team of independent filmmakers to create Double Word Score[11][12] a 90-second short film exploring a blossoming romance between two neighbours as they self-isolate during the coronavirus pandemic.
In September 2022, while filming season 3 of Ted Lasso, Street performed in a week-long theatre run of the stage adaptation of Blackadder Goes Forth at The Pump House Theatre, Watford in the title role of Edmund Blackadder.
Directing and Producing
[edit]In 2023, Street collaborated with producer Tobias Phillips to write, produce and direct Hanging,[13] a short comedy film, narrated by James Lance, about a young woman, struggling with a hangover, who finds herself locked out of the house. Hanging would be the first production from Street's production company Film Béduer[14].[15]
Street and Phillips continue to collaborate on a number of Film Béduer[14] projects at various stages of development including Canine, Haul and The Grower.[16]
