Elise van Calcar-Schiotling, born Eliza Carolina Ferdinanda Fleischacker, (Amsterdam, 19 November 1822 – The Hague, 13 July 1904) was a Dutch author, publicist, educator and feminist.[1]
Van Calcar worked as a teacher and governess. She also gave courses to other teachers and founded in 1863 the journal De Hoop der Toekomst (The Hope of Tomorrow) in which the views of the German educator Friedrich Fröbel were expressed.[2] She also gave a series of public lectures on Fröbel's method at Felix Meritis in Amsterdam. She headed the Dutch Education House (Nederlands Opvoedingshuis) in Wassenaar (1866–1873).[3]
In The Double Calling of Women (De dubbele roeping der vrouw, Amsterdam 1872) she advocated education for women. From 1877 she published the spiritual journal On the Borders of Two Worlds (Op de Grenzen van Twee Werelden).[3] Her collection of short stories From Far Away Lands and Nearby (Uit verre landen en van nabij[4], 1850) contains a remarkable story about Suriname.
