Edgardo Defortuna is an Argentine-American real estate developer and businessman. He is the President, CEO, and founder of Fortune International Group, real estate development firm located in Miami, Florida. [1][2] Defortuna is fluent in English and Spanish.

Early life and education

[edit]

Defortuna was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in electrical and mechanical engineering. Then, in 1983, he moved to the United States where he earned a master’s of business degree from the University of Miami. [3]

Career

[edit]

In 1983, Defortuna managed residential properties in Miami while their owners were out of the country and acquired a residential real estate brokerage in the Brickell neighborhood of Miami. [4] He sold units within the Brickell Place complex, a 23-story multi-tower condominium development located on Brickell Avenue, and established his first office, which would later become known as Fortune International Group. [5][6]

In the early 1990s, the inflation rate in Argentina hovered around 25% and led wealthier buyers to seek other opportunities.[7] Property investments became a favorite among Argentines, with numerous projects backed by $50 million from Argentina, including hotels, condos, office buildings, and warehousing. [8]

Defortuna provided property management services to South American clients, including those from Argentina, interested in investing in South Florida real estate. [9][10][11]He collaborated with legal and financial experts to simplify the purchasing process and established business relationships with local brokers in Argentina, Brazil, and Colombia. By the early 2000s, Argentina was among the top countries whose citizens were buying residential properties in Miami.[12]

In 1998, Defortuna and his wife, Ana Cristina Defortuna, launched Fortune International Group’s residential development branch, developing projects in Brickell, Key Biscayne, Coral Gables, Miami Beach, Aventura, and Sunny Isles Beach. One of Edgardo’s first ground-up projects was Jade Residences at Brickell.

Edgardo was among the first developers to build luxury high-rises in Sunny Isles Beach. [13][14] Subsequent projects included: Jade Beach (2008), a 53-story apartment building featuring 248 residences, Jade Ocean (2009), a 52-story condominium featuring 235 residences, and Jade Signature (2018), a 57-story apartment building featuring 191 residences. The last was a collaboration with the architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron and interior designer Pierre-Yves Rochon.

Community involvement

[edit]

Defortuna serves on the advisory board of the University of Miami Business School. He is a member of the board of trustees at Ransom Everglades School. Edgardo also serves on the board of the Argentine-U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Miami.

Personal life

[edit]

Defortuna is married to Ana Cristina and has five children.
