Daniel Coelho Gomes (born in 1977 in Lisbon) is a Portuguese software engineer and researcher, best known as the founder and head of Arquivo.pt, a research infrastructure that facilitates the search and access to historical web information preserved since the 1990s.

He has published extensively in the field of Web archiving and web-based information systems and has collaborated on various international projects.[1]

Biography

[edit]

Early Life and Education

[edit]

Daniel Gomes was born in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1977. He enrolled in the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Lisbon and completed his Computer Science degree in 2001.

He later earned his PhD in Computer Engineering in 2007 from the University of Lisbon, with a thesis focused on designing large-scale systems for processing web data to automatically derive evolution trends (Big Data).[2]

Career

[edit]

He worked as a researcher at the Institute of Applied Science and Technology (ICAT) and the Large-Scale Information Systems Laboratory (LaSIGE).[3][4][5]

After his research, he initiated the Portuguese Web Archive project at the Foundation for National Scientific Computing, which led to the public service Arquivo.pt, managed by the Foundation for Science and Technology.[6][7]

He has authored several scientific publications and participated in research projects aimed at improving how digital information is stored, preserved, and retrieved.[1]

Activism

[edit]

He has also been involved in environmental activism, advocating for a sustainable circular economy. In 2012, he founded the civic movement TaraRecuperavel.org to raise awareness about environmental sustainability in Portugal.[8] He has collaborated with ecological non-governmental organizations such as Quercus, Brigada do Mar[9], and the APLM - Portuguese Marine Litter Association[10]. He has also contributed to environmental sustainability laws.[11][12][13]

Between 2012 and 2021, he authored AjoLogoExisto, a blog about activism and civic awareness.[14]

Notable Works

[edit]

In 2007, Daniel Gomes founded Arquivo.pt at the Foundation for National Scientific Computing (FCCN), now a division of the Foundation for Science and Technology. Arquivo.pt is a public service that allows users to search and access archived web pages from the Portuguese web since 1996. It is one of the main tools for digital preservation in Portugal.[15]

He was the editor-in-chief of the book "The Past Web: Exploring Web Archives", which examines the methodologies and technologies used in web archiving.[16]
