Arquivo.pt

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Arquivo.pt, formerly known as the Portuguese web-archive, is a Web archive of content dating back to 1996.[1] Its mission is to periodically archive content of national interest available on the web, storing and preserving information of historical interest for the future. It is a service of the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT) that was initially founded at the Fundação para a Computação Científica Nacional by Daniel Coelho Gomes.

As well as helping to preserve scientific and historical knowledge, the Web archive also allows ordinary citizens to keep their memories as individuals.[2][3]

Arquivo.pt aims to archive and preserve web content relevant to the Portuguese community.[4]

Arquivo.pt provides a free preservation service for Portuguese web authors, and a research resource that has been used by researchers, for example, to automatically measure the accessibility of the Portuguese web for people with disabilities.[5]

Arquivo.pt also allows any Internet user to suggest archiving a site using a special form on its website.[6]

In 2017, Arquivo.pt celebrated 10 years since the project start.[7] During this year, Arquivo.pt received 100,000 users with a growing trend as the service is disseminated (90% are new users and 53% are originated outside of Portugal).

[edit]

At the end of March 2021, it implemented a search engine for images from the web from 1996 to the present, called Dionisius, which contains more than a billion images from the web's past.[8][9]
