Daab Chao Ram (ดาบเจ้าราม) a system of Krabi Krabong wielding the Thai single or duel swords ("Daab", Thai single edge sword).[1] This system was created at Ramkhamhaeng University Thai Weaponry Club in 1971 by the various students of the numerous sword schools from all over Thailand who compiled their knowledge, skills, and experience which lead to the creation of "Daab Chao Ram".[2] Daab Chao Ram "Daab" meaning sword, "Chao" meaning lord, and "Ram" is short for King Ramkhamhaeng or Por Khun Ramkhamhaeng Maharaj. All of them together can mean either: 1) Sword of Lord Ram, 2) Legion of Lord Ram, or 3) Might of Lord Ram (meaning might differ from person to person). The name was given to commemorate Por Khun Ramkhamhaeng Maharaj for his bravery in battle that earned him the nickname "Khamhaeng" meaning, bold.[3]
This system is also a basis to many modern day Krabi Krabong system such as ดาบก้ำฟ้า,[4] Krabi Krabong USA[5] and Tactical Thai Sword.[2]
Characteristics of Daab Chao Ram
[edit]Low and wide stance
[edit]Low and wide stance (similar to lunge that was being done in fencing but with both legs spread wider out to the side) is needed to maintain proper balance of the torso since the arm now is extended through the holding of the sword in each hand. Moreover, by being in a low and wide stance, practitioner automatically load their legs ready for the next pounching either forward or backward.
Dynamic footwork
[edit]With the low and wide stance, each steps that were made, either forward or backward, will cover alot of ground. And with the already loaded legs, the force generated from the leveraged leg is massive thus, allowing the practitioner to perform a sudden explosive movement.
Heavy hitting
[edit]Unlike most Krabi Krabong system that emphasized swiftness, slashing, katas, and light training, thus leading to a fragile body structure that cannot withstand too many blows and weak attack. Daab Chao Ram slightly sacrifies some speed for a more hitting force. Combining it with the explosive footwork, all attacks that was executed will generate tremendous power since, practitioner will be throwing in their body's weight along with the attack as well. Against opponents who were not trained to deal with heavy blows, a few of of these hits will demoralize their fighting spirit.
Effective against multiple opponent
[edit]Backward slashing is performed simultaneously with the forward slashing. When performing a forward slashing, the torso of the practitioner naturally twisted in order for the forward slashing hand to reach its target all the while the other hand slashes backward with the intention to either keep distance from the opponent, to block an incoming attacks, or to attack.
