Thanks to features like the the unified hardware platform used across its data centers, cost-effective hardware sourcing at scale and proprietary load management scripts. The company is able to offer lower prices to its customers.

In 2017, Contabo won the German Data Center Award, an award given to the most innovative, visionary, energy-efficient data centers in Germany.[4] The award has been given since 2011.

Contabo extended its operations outside of Europe for the first time in 2020, when it opened data centers in the USA.

Contabo has received many positive online user reviews thanks to its affordability and scalability. A client of ten years noted that the web hosting provider was cheap but with lots of RAM,[5] making it a good option for budget VPS hosting.

Criticisms/Challenges

[edit]

Contabo has received some negative reviews over the years, specifically referring to poor customer service and frequent downtime at the Dusseldorf data centre.[5]

One major disruption occurred in September 2024, when there was an unexpected cooling problem at Contabo's Nuremberg data centre, which meant several servers were unavailable during a short time period. Contabo's telephone was unavailable during this time, which angered users even further. Services were back online by the evening.[2]

Contabo stated that the downtime was likely due to a severe storm in Franconia which caused a voltage fluctuation in the public power grid and led to the malfunction in the system.

Lessons learned from this incident allowed Contabo to mitigate a similar incident in October 2024, when the Nuremberg data center again lost power from the public grid, affecting the cooling system. This time, response times were greatly improved, the cooling system was restored to full functionality, and the incident was resolved in under two hours with no affected customers.
