Chaos In The CBD are a house music duo from Auckland, New Zealand, consisting of brothers Ben and Louis Helliker-Hales. Known for their understated house and techno music, the duo incorporates elements of jazz, tribal and balearic sounds into their productions..[1]
History
[edit]Chaos In The CBD began releasing music in the early 2010s. Their breakthrough came with the release of the 2015 Midnight in Peckham,[2] whose title track gained underground popularity for its hypnotic, horn-driven sound.[3] Following this, the duo released several records on their own label, In Dust We Trust, including Accidental Meetings (2017) and Intimate Fantasy (2022). Their first commercially issued DJ mix, Fabric Presents Chaos in the CBD, arrived in 2023.[4]
The duo have been able to mark themselves out as one of the most eminent underground duos to emerge out of the South Pacific.[5]
Performance Highlights
[edit]The duo recorded five Boiler Room sets between 2016 and 2022, which began with a Church recordings party in London[6], soon followed by a Rhythm Section takeover in Melbourne in the same year.[7] The London duo then brought the heat for the first ever True Music show with Ballantine’s in Beirut.[8] In 2019, they headlined a showcase at Nitsa in Barcelona, and in 2022 performed on the Boiler Room stage at Glitch Festival in Malta.[9]
In March 2022, Chaos In The CBD made their debut on BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix debut[10], featuring tracks from artists such as Ron Trent, Zodiac and more.[11]
The duo’s grasp of house music history made their Fabric presents Chaos In The CBD essential listening in 2023[12]. Creating a tunnel between 1990 to 2007, the mix is a timeless listen, condensing the ebbs, flows, gear changes and the feelings that surface during an all-night-long experience.[13]
Notable Touring
[edit]In late 2021, following the UK lockdown, Chaos In The CBD embarked on a UK tour, performing every weekend in October and November across cities including Cardiff, Bristol, Liverpool, Brighton, Sheffield, Manchester, Leeds, and London. They also held a five-week residency at Phonox in London during November 2021, where they performed several all-night-long sets with guests such as Jon Sable, 404 Eros and more.[14]
November 2022 saw them make their long awaited return in the capital for an all night long extravaganza at the iconic South London institution, Electric Brixton.[15]
In 2023, they headlined three sold-out shows in London, including an all night long performance at Village Underground[16], The Cause[17], and a sold out show at Koko, Camden.[18]
